Levi's POV
Couldn't sleep, couldn't sleep, couldn't sleep.
I cuddled JayJay, trying to hum Mommy's little song. She always sang it to me as she tucked the blanket around me. She'll whisper, "Goodnight, Levi, the stars are always watching you..." and I can sleep. But I had a nightmare. I can't sleep... not when the monsters will gobble me up. Where's Mommy?
Climbing out of bed, I went to find Mommy. She was standing outside, talking to a very tall man. "Kuchel, I mean it, you need to leave this place."
"I can't."
"Why not?"
Mommy looked back to the house, not spotting me. "Kenny, I just can't leave. Please... I have to stay here."
"You hate this place since day one! Why would you want to stay here?" The tall man glances at the house, and I think he sees me. I gasped, trying to hide behind the walls again. "Who else is in there? Kuchel?"
Mommy moved herself to block me from the tall man, "Kenny, there's no one else here but me. Now, leave-."
"I saw someone in there. I may be a lot of things, but I'm not blind. Come out wherever you are!" He shouts, and everything shook. I got scared so badly, I accidentally broke one of Mommy's flower vases. "See? Kuchel, there's someone there. Get out of the way-."
"No- I won't let you." Mommy was using her scary voice... I don't like the scary voice. "Kenny, get off of my property."
"You sound like Mom with that tone. Almost like a mother's tone. Kuchel, do you have a child in there?" Mommy was silent. "Ohh... you do have a child in there. Why not show them to Uncle Kenny then?"
Mommy gave a big sigh, "You'll scare him. And I don't want to make my son known. You'll know what they want to do with us. For all I know, we're the last ones in all the kingdoms. I don't want anything bad to happen to my son-."
"Who's the father?"
"I don't know. And I don't care. I'm not leaving him behind, and I'm not going to show him the way we had lived for years, Kenny. He's going to have a good life here. I just know it. The law doesn't know he exists... so, please... I'm staying here."
"Let me see him- you say it's your son, so it's my nephew. Let me see him."
"He should be sleeping-."
"He's not sleeping if things are breaking in your house and if I saw someone wandering inside. Unless you have another... guest in your house, it's your son. He's up, and I want to see my nephew."
Mommy sighed again, "Stay out here, Kenny. I'll get him." Mommy walked inside the house, and I tried to hide behind the door. "Levi, come on out. It's okay."
"W-Who is he, Mommy...?"
"He's my brother... your uncle. Come on, I won't let you get hurt by him. Not on my life, Levi." She opened her arms to a hug, and I ran into them. Her hug was warm and fuzzy. I love her hugs. Her hands ran through my hair, as she smiled softly. "Oh, you're growing big, Levi... come on, let's go see your uncle..."
She took my hand tightly as she led me outside. The cold made me shiver, and I wanted my blanket to keep me warm. The tall man was leaning on the rails, smiling with a scary smile and his big hat. I stopped in the walkway, not wanting to go forward. The tall man walked over to me, kneeling as he took his hat off.
"What's yer name?"
I looked to Mommy, and she nodded her head. "Go ahead, I'm right here."
"Levi..."
"Levi, huh? Well, what are you doing up at night?"
"N-Nightmares..." I squeezed Mommy's hand tightly. "Mommy, I wanna sleep..."
She brushed my hair to the side with her fingers as she smiles softly. "Mommy will be there in a second. Now, go back to your bed. I'll tuck you in. I promise."
"Will you hum to me again?"
"Whatever you want, Levi... don't worry. I'll be there in a few minutes."
She lets my hand go, and I walked back inside the house. Climbing back into bed, I hugged JayJay and waited for Mommy to come inside. I don't know how long she was gone, but I waited and waited. Mommy didn't come back for a long time.
Mommy came in with a candle, still seeing I was awake. "Oh, Levi... I'm sorry I took so long... still can't sleep?"
"No..."
She began to tuck me in, starting to hum her little song. Mommy kissed me on the forehead as she tucked JayJay next to me in bed. "Now, you'll sleep tight, Levi. I'll see you in the morning-."
"Can I sleep with you, Mommy? I'm scared..."
"Of who?"
"The dark..."
Mommy smiled, opening her arms. "Alright, come on, Levi. Let's go. I'll keep you safe." I jumped into her arms, and she held me tightly. "Oh, you're getting big. Levi, one day, you'll be brave to face the dark. And you'll have to sleep alone. Levi, do you understand?"
"Okay..."
"Starting tomorrow. You have to be a big boy, and you have to know the difference between right and wrong. Levi, are you going to be a brave boy who does the right thing?"
I nodded my head, closing my eyes as Mommy walked me into her room. "Yes..."
"That's my boy." She lays me in the bed, pulling the blanket over me. Mommy climbed into bed as well, wrapping her arms around me. "You're my little knight in armor, Levi... I can't wait to see what kind of man you would grow up to be..." She kisses my forehead, and I slept to her hums. "Goodnight... my little Levi..."
