Basement Level

Poppy and Tina lead Newt through the basement to their office. Poppy sat down at one desk and started organizing permit applications, half-heartedly throwing them in a pile without opening them. Tina started organizing herself again.

"So, do you got your wand permit?" she asked "All foreigners have to have them in New York."

"Here, here." Poppy said.

Tina laughed, but it was half-hearted and quiet.

"I made a postal application weeks ago."

Lie.  Poppy thought. She had been through this pile many times in the past months and, even if it looked like she wasn't looking at any of the letters at all, she was reading the names individually. None of them said Newt Scamander.

"Scamander." Tina said quietly as she scribbled it down on her paper "And you were just in Equatorial Guinea?"

"Yes. I was, collecting information for my book on magical creatures."

They all stood in silence. Mr. Graves walked up to them.

"Mr. Graves, sir." Abernathy greeted.

"Afternoon, uh, Abernathy." he said.

Tina pushed forward, but Poppy stayed back. She always had a weird suspicion about Graves. Tina looked up to him like he was a hero, but deep down Poppy felt like he was hiding something.

"Mr. Graves. This is Mr. Scamander. He's got a crazy creature in that case and it got out and caused mayhem in a bank, sir." she said so fast, Poppy had a little trouble focusing on it.

"Let's see the little guy, then." Graves said, walking to an empty desk.

Tina gave Poppy a little smile, but wasn't that quick to give up his case. Poppy rolled her eyes and snatched it from Newt's hand. She set it down on the desk in front of Graves and unlatched it, but when it was open, they were all shocked to find-
