Antonio~
"Hey, baby girl..."
"Antonio!"
My baby sister squealed as I leaned down to give her a hug and kiss on the forehead.
"How you feeling?"
"I'm okay right now. But they take good care of me."
"That's good. You ever have any problems, you know you can call me right?"
"Yes."
"Where's Mommy?"
"She went to get coffee. She drinks that a lot now."
"Really?"
"Mhm!"
"Well, I've got a surprise for you."
"Really?! What is it?"
"Hold on. I'll go get it. Its in the car,"
I left the hospital room where my little sister stayed. My chest ached while I pulled the five foot tall snow white teddy-bear through the corridors. Before I could reach the door, my mother began walking towards me.
"Hey ma," I hugged her. Her eyes were heavy and she had a steamy coffee in her hands.
"Oh, baby. Don't cry." She wiped my cheeks. "Have you seen her yet?"
I nodded. "She's lost so much weight mommy.. there's gotta be something else they can do. More tests, more treatments. Anything.."
"They're doing all they can baby. All we can do is wait it out. Now stop crying. Everything will be alright,"
"I wanna talk to her doctors."
"Now, Antonio. These men and women are busy, they don't need you harassing them. Its all in God's hands. Now go spend some more time with her. All she does is talk about her big brother. I'm glad you're here, now pull yourself together."
I took a few deep breaths and wiped my face off. My mom went in first.
"Your brother brought something for you baby,"
She squealed in excitement as I stuffed the huge bear through the door.
"Oh my gosh! I love it!"
"I uh, brought you a little one too. One that fits in the bed. Then I brought you a bunch of other stuff, here."
"What do you say, Keir?"
"Thank you Tony,"
"You're welcome baby girl."
I took at seat next to my mom as my seven year old sister played with a bed full of new toys.
"How have you been baby?"
"I've been okay."
"You're as white as ghost, have you been eating?"
"Ha. Yeah, I have."
"What did you eat today?"
I looked at my watch and saw that it read 6pm.
"Uh, nothing today actually. I'm not really hungry."
"That's nonsense. You need to go out and get you something to eat!"
"I'm fine, ma. When is the last time you've been home?"
"I haven't. I'm here with your sister all day."
"Where's her dad?"
My mom shook her head. "Who knows."
