13. Homecoming

I engulf Erin in the biggest, tightest hug I can physically manage.  “I miss you so, so much!”  I cry.

Erin confuses me by not hugging back.  “I m-missed you t-too, but y-you’re crushing me!”

I quickly release her and hold my hands up in surrender.  “Sorry!  I’m sorry, that was too much, and-“

“Hey.”  Erin interrupts.  “I still want a hug.  Just, if you could not crush my bones this time?”

“Sorry.” I express my regrets again before hugging her gently, careful not to hurt her.

“It’s fine!  You don’t have to apologize so much, sweetie.” Erin has always been the maternal type.  Even now, right after she’s been risen, she’s like the motherly big sister I’ve never had.  “Although, if you could just help me up, I would be really grateful.”

We take hold of each other’s forearms, then I hoist Erin onto her feet.  I release her slowly, careful to ensure she doesn’t topple over.

She seems stable enough, so I begin to back away to give her some breathing space, but she loses her balance, making Sam rush to her rescue.

“Woah.” Sam

After catching Erin, Sam gets her back on her feet, not letting go until he is absolutely sure she’s stable.

She seems dizzy for a moment, but then she stabilizes enough to walk on her own. Erin takes a step forward, then turns to look at me.  “How are you still so young?”

“What do you mean ‘how am I young’?” I ask, a look of confusion clearly written on my face.

She carefully steps closer to me, scrutinizing me, examining my facial features.  Her eye go wide a moment later.  “Oh my god, are you a vampire?”

Gabriel, Sam, Castiel, and Dean all turn their eyes to me, cautious that maybe there was something I wasn’t telling them.

“No!  What?  How…why would you think I’m a vampire?  And why wouldn’t I be young?”  What is wrong with Erin?

“Why wouldn’t you be young?  It’s been 20 years, Alex!”  Flustered, Erin looks at me confused and upset as to how and why I wasn’t getting what she was saying.

For about five minutes, all I can do is sit and stare at her in shock.

Taking a deep breath, I break the news to her.  “Erin, it’s been two months.”

Her confused, flustered expression breaks into a confused, traumatized one.

I had completely forgotten about the Winchesters and Angels still surrounding us until now, suddenly aware of the tense air they helped create.

Erin bursts into tears, hiding her face.  As I approach to comfort her, she practically gives me a heart attack by snapping her head up.  “No.”

“What?”  I ask her, unsure of what I heard.

“NO!!!”  Erin screams, seemingly at herself, before taking off.

Before anyone can do anything, or even go after her, including myself, there’s a flash of light.

The flash of light is followed by the loudest boom I have ever heard in my life.

Seconds later the loudest scream I’d ever heard, which I later realized was me seeing my best friend, the most important woman in my life struck by lightning.
