james went into the familiar home first, i followed. drew trailed behind me. i could tell he was nervous about the whole situation. i get it. the last time he saw her, she had a total meltdown-- so did i.
an aroma of freshly baked cookies and pie fill my sense as i step foot into the house. when i was younger, my mom would always be baking. i finally make eye contact with her.
her pajama pants were a fuzzy pink material, her shirt was an oversized t-shirt she bought on our trip to florida.
"hey, mom." i speak soft and slow, silently praying she won't have a meltdown. i can feel drew's hand resting on my back.
"ah, valeria. how are you sweetie?"
woah.
she knows who i am. for the first time in three years, my mom knows who i am. she knows me.
"i- i'm great, mom."
"who is this beautiful man you have beside you? he single?"
i chuckle and embarrassed laugh.
"this is drew, my boyfriend."
"ah."
she smiles, then turns back to the window. she can see the ocean from where she's sitting. it's beautiful-- always has been.
