What is being human if not connections

Lenas POV

It's been weeks and I can't seem to have a day without running into Kara. Our conversations are short and filled with small talk but without fail she gives me a complement that's fairly generic before she leaves like "Wow Lena, did you get more tan?" Or "Whenever you're hair is down it brings out your eyes." What is that even supposed to mean! There always seems to be words trapped on Karas tongue that she never speaks.

She's stopped and almost said but she's never just spoke. Every word Kara says seems to be carefully thought out before she speaks it. I find it interesting. People often doesn't hesitate to call me Bitch or some other colorful insult. But not Kara. Never Kara. She's never said anything close to undermine me. More often than not it's some sort of praise. Like the other day during another interview.

"It's really amazing how you started college at what, sixteen? I mean imagine being that smart!" Kara gushes. I can't recall how we got to the topic of university.

"It's really not that impressive." I try to dismiss the praise.

"Not impressive? Lena, at sixteen I was trying to understand ear-dating!" Kara often almost has... slip ups or something. Where she almost says one word before quickly changing her mind.

"Men will forever be a mystery Kara."

"Don't try and change the subject. You need to know how impressive that is! Like, I could never be that smart in science."

"It was just chemistry. No biggie right?"

Kara had a look almost saying she wanted to agree, "Chemistry! That's even more impressive!" Odd. Very odd indeed.

Sams has made it her life's goal to tease me about my liking (not crush) towards the blonde reporter. I don't see anything wrong with expressing adoration about another person.

"It's getting a little sad Lena." Sam sighs cutting off my latest string of complements, "Just ask her out or something I beg of you."

"One; I'm probably not her soulmate. Two; I don't even know if she likes women."

"So? Just shoot your shot. I didn't know if Alex liked women but I scored." They've gone on two dates so far. Sam tried to hide it but I can tell she's quite smitten, "Maybe it runs in the family."

"Don't be ridiculous." I scoff, "Me and you both know that's not how this works."

"It could be. Ruby is seeming to show early signs of bisexuality." Sam says very matter of factly.

"That proves nothing."

"I think it's proves everything."

"God, why am I still friends with you?"

"Cause without me your life would be awfully boring." Sam shrugs it off casually.

I tap my pen on my desk as I look at the papers in front of me. All of them seem wordy and boring. If I had, had it my way I would be down in the labs tinkering to my hearts content. But instead, I'm in some empty office with no ounce of color looking at some reports. I hope Lex can feel me cursing him in prison.

I'm pulled out of my thoughts by a timid knock on the door, "Come in!" I call assuming it's my assistant Jess.

"Lena hi." Kara tangibly waves entering my office, "I'm sorry to bother you at such a random hour but it seems someone hacked into your email and sent them all to CatCo."

"They have?" My head perks up a bit. (It is not because Kara is here)

"Yeah. I figured you would want them so here." She extends her hand revealing a small flash drive, "I stopped them before they got into the hands of a different reporter. They're all sharks really."

I tentatively take the drive, "Thank you... really. Let me know if there is any way I can repay you."

"Actually..." Kara drums her fingers against her legs, "Me and my friends get together every week and host this game night. They get really competitive but they're fun. I was wondering if you would like to join us on Friday? I know it's kinda late notice but I thought I would ask."

I just... stare. I didn't think I'd see the day where I, a Luthor got invited to casual hangout. Sure my emails are flooded with gala invites but never something casual. Never. There must be something more to it than just that.

"I hope you didn't give me this from a misplaced friendship." I decide on saying holding up the drive, "I have no intent on making any friends here in National City, I'm perfectly content with the friend I have now. So thank you for the offer but I'll have to decline. Have a nice day."

"Right..." Kara mutters with a small nod of her head.

She left my office quickly after that.

Karas POV

"She said friend Alex. Not friends but friend. Do you know how depressing that is?"

"It's almost as depressing as you being held up on some stiff CEO."

"She's not stiff." I'm quick to defend as usual, "She's clearly just misunderstood and under socialized. I'm positive she's just as sweet as Sam."

I have no putty bringing Alex's new lady friend into this.

"How can you be so sure?" Alex now just seems concerned for my own well being, "You know next to nothing about this girl aside from what the internet says."

"Which is corrupted by what Lex did. She is not her brother Alex."

"Yet. She's not her brother yet. The second she finds out you're a kryptonian she could go insane just like he did with Clark."

"Kal and Lex are different. So stop comparing this situation to that one. I just have this... this feeling that Lena is good."

"I just don't think we can trust her." Alex shakes her head lightly, "I don't know about you, but personally I don't want to see the day you get outed as an alien."

I don't think I'd mind it to much... i think quietly to myself as Alex continues to lecture me.
