Why do I let myself dream like this?
If Jake turned his head a few degrees to the side, their eyes would meet, and they'd be close enough to kiss. This thought made Yeonhee's cheeks burn a bright pink, and she quickly turned her head away, looking everywhere except at him. Don't think things like that, Yeonhee, she scolded herself silently, you'll just get your hopes up, stupid.
"Yeon-ie?" Jake looked up suddenly.
"Hm?" The girl was still shifting her gaze somewhat nervously.
"I'm sorry that the others didn't come."
At this, Yeonhee froze and slowly lowered her head. Didn't. Not couldn't. Didn't. Those were two very different words.
"It's fine. They're just busy. Maybe next time," she bit back her bitter feelings, eyes smarting as if someone was pricking at them with scissors.
If Jake noticed a hint of malice in the sharp words Yeonhee spoke, he didn't comment on it. He just leaned his head on her arm rubbed his cheek against her shoulder comfortingly.
"Hey, look how pretty the sky is now," he muttered almost sleepily, eyes fixed on the sky. The boy flopped over on his back, lying down on the pier, looking directly up at the sky. He tugged on Yeonhee's hand, which he was still cradling in his.
Yeonhee obliged, and tilted her head up to the skies. The fiery colors of the setting sun had faded, and left a magical, deep blue in its place. The stars weren't out yet, leaving a vast stretch of pure azure atmosphere. The girl smiled softly.
Her favorite color.
