Missing pieces of my skull, I'll sew on patches of my own soul

Jake's clear brown eyes looked deeply into Yeonhee's own, almost as if he were searching for something.

"Yeon-ie," he began earnestly, "what do you think of me?"

The girl's breath hitched. It was like Jake was reading her mind. Were her thoughts leaking out of her head through cracks in her cranium? Was that how he seemed to know what she was thinking?

She shook away the thoughts and tried to formulate an answer to Jake's sudden question.

"You're my favorite person, Jaeyun. You're so happy, and bright, and calm, and...and I can't imagine what my life would be like if I hadn't met you, honestly. I know it sounds cheesy as hell or whatever," she laughed sadly, "but if we hadn't become friends, I–" she hesitated, "I might not be here anymore."

Jake looked at his friend sadly. There was an underlying meaning to her words. He realized that he could have lost her had he not come to the pier that day. The boy shifted closer to her, interlacing their fingers.

Yeonhee was glad that it was too dark for him to see her flushed cheeks.

"I'm glad you're still here with me, Yeon-ie. So glad."

There's nothing you or I can do, so let the stars fall,

"Me too." The girl carefully sat up and looked back out at the sea. The moon had risen and was mirrored in the undulating waters. Jake sat up too, not wanting to let go of his friend's hand, and just played with her fingers, thinking about what Yeonhee had just said.

A tear slid down his cheek as he tried to imagine what it would be like to live without the girl beside him. He wiped away the tear discreetly them looked back at Yeonhee.

"Yeon-ie?"

'Cause from up here, the sky is my thoughts, and we're all so small.

"Hmm?"

"You wanna know what I think of you?"

"Go ahead."

"I think," he paused, mulling over his words, "I think you're the most wonderful human I've ever met."

Yeonhee quirked a brow at this. "Really?"

"Yes. You're wonderful, yeah, but you're also human. You're allowed to be sad, or angry, or disappointed. It's okay if you do something wrong, as long as you learn from it. You're normal, and yeah, you might be a little disappointing, but you're real, and you're you, and that's why people love you so much."

He leaned closer to look her in the eye. Their faces couldn't be any more than twenty centimeters apart now.

"That's why I love you so much. So don't be scared to share anything you need to, because bottling it all up isn't going to help you, okay?"

Yeonhee thought her heart would explode, it was beating so loudly, but she couldn't break the gentle gaze between the two of them.

"Okay."
