"Nex, are you ready?"
"Not really, Dad," I sighed. My father sat down next to me on the porch. His black hair rustled in the wind. I wish I could've seen his eyes, but one was covered by an eye-patch and the other was facing away from me.
"What's up?" he asked.
"The sky," his laugh echoed around the small island.
"I'm being serious, Nex," he sighed, once his laughter died down. "What's wrong? I thought you were so excited to get off this horrible island. I would be! You're going to go to a place where you will be able to train your Legacy properly. With others that have better experiences than me."
I turned my head to look at his one eye. "I know, Dad, but I'm gonna miss this place. This is my home! And I'm gonna miss you too. You know how horrible my social skills are!"
My dad put his arm around my shoulders, and pulled me in for a hug. We stayed like that for a while, just sitting there, looking out at the ocean waves that crashed onto our little beach. After a minute or two, my father said, "If you want, I can drop you off at the school."
"Would you do that?"
"I offered."
"Yes please!"
"Alright then. You got all the stuff you need?"
I quickly went through the mental list in my head. Shirts? Check. Pants, shorts, and some skirts? Check. Socks and shoes? Check. Couple of hoodies? Check. Backpack? Check. Check, check, check, check.
"Yes, I have all I need."
"Alright, let's get moving," Dad stood up and lifted off the floor. He flew around the small cabin he built, before I was adopted.
I stepped out onto the beach. I checked to make sure my bag was on my shoulders, then I unfolded my set of wings.
I flapped them once, twice, three times just to check that they could hold me in the sky. Then I lifted off and flew up. I hovered in the air to wait for Dad. He's always been slower than me, because my wings were so large. But lately he's been getting slower and slower.
"Dad, are you sure you want to do this? It's really far, and you're going to have to fly all the way back."
"Don't worry, Nex, I'll be fine."
"Are you sure?" Dad turned mid air to look me in the eyes. His look said it all and I shrugged. "Alright, but if you faint, fall asleep or whatever on the way there, or back, I will laugh in your face."
"How nice," he commented. "Now come on, slow poke! Last one's there is a rotten egg!" he zipped ahead. I rolled my eyes, cause I knew I would pass him without breaking a sweat. I angled my body in the direction we needed to go, and I was off, chasing after him.
