"He is working with Jackson," Red said standing from his seat.
"But Tom is gone." Liz walked up to him. I just stood there frozen. Crap, crap, crap. I said to myself. "That's what we thought. He had reached out to Jackson. Told him that he can get to me. He said that he has information." I walk up slowly to where they were both standing. "What kind of information?" Red just looked at me dodging the question.
"If this is to happen we need to do it now. The information that he has on the post office he could target any of us," he shakes his head and walks over to the mantle. The fireplace cold with ash. "It's better for us to stay together," I said sitting on the couch. "Why would Tom start working with an underground organization of child assassins?"
"Because he was made in a place just like that. Remember the Major. I think you guys took him down not to long ago, as well as Tom. He should know people from Inside of the organization, people he can talk to, find out exactly what Jackson is looking for, and give it to him." I explained. Liz joins me on the couch and runs her hand over her face. "We have to find out where this base is getting a team in there and end this."
He walked back over and sat in the chair opposite of us.
"If we bust in there like a bunch of gun happy lunatics it will he a slather. We have no idea how many recruits are on that base, how many kids."
I look down at my phone. A long pause came into the room.
"I can make some calls," I said.
"To whom exactly," Liz asked raising her brows.
"I was a high ranking agent I know people that can help. And as for Tom, I might know what he is thinking about this little alliance he has made for himself. I have been where he is in now. I was a compromised deep cover operative. I don't know if he remembers the last time we met but I do."
"Wait for what?"Liz questioned. I saw her and Reds surprise on there faces. I usually tell them everything. I kind of have to because of the whole Jackson thing. "I saw him on a job a long time ago. I was still a recruit. He was looking for a new assignment." Lizzie turned to me. "How long ago?"
I hesitated. I know where she is getting at. I know what she is asking. Liz was his next assignment. That's all she knows though. She doesn't know that Red is the one who gave it to him. Red wants to keep this a secret from her. So I'm not really the best position to be in right.
"Liz I'm sorry." That's all said. She knew what I meant. She just sat back in her chair. "It's late you two should really get some rest. There are rooms upstairs. We can finish this conversation in the morning," Red interrupted. It was late, almost 1 in the morning. I saw Liz stand from her seat and walk up the small creaking wooden steps.
When we hear a door close Red looks at me. "You know," he said.
"Of course I know. How could you lie to her like that? How can you not telling her the true reason Tom came to her life?" I try not to raise my voice. He got up and sat next to me. I am still mad about before, and this is making it worse.
"Are you alright about before?"
"Stop changing the subject." He fell silent. Sitting back and rubbing his hand over his short hair.
"I don't know how Sam," his face drooped."That doesn't matter. You're so afraid she is going to leave. Believe me, Red she won't. You don't know how she talks about you. She cares. If you are honest with your words, telling her the won't change that." I smile at him. He opens his arms to me.
"It's going to be okay Dad."I could hear the crickets that filled the night with sound.
"Go gets some rest. We have a long day tomorrow. Sam, I haven't changed my mind about what I had said earlier."
I pull away from him.
He looks down at me.
"Neither have I."
I walk up the steps counting every moment that it takes for him to say something.
"Good I didn't think you would," he said still facing in the opposite direction. I stop at the second to last step on the top.
A smile spreads on my face.
"I love you too daddy."
When I walk into the guest room I found a bag sitting in my bed that read happy birthday Sam. It was a gift bag with that colorful paper sticking out. Before even looking I find the card next to it. "To Sam from Red & Dembe."
It had a little funny joke from Dembe. Saying don't worry you're not old. But from Red, it shocked me. "Dear Sam, I figured you don't like birthdays by the way you didn't bring it up, you probably get that from me. But the things you didn't get from me were from your mother. The things I love the most. Like your kindness, your consideration for others, and you are stronger then you know. Also your attitude, and your stubbornness. We are two cannot be defined. We both have done things we wish we could take back. I can never take back the time we lost. The years we could have had together as a very Interesting family.I can never give you back your mother, lord knows I wish I could. But I am here now, and if you let me I want to be there for you. I want to protect you. I'm not the best person for anyone especially not my own daughter. I have made mistakes that affect others. I have made mistakes that affect you, and I still don't understand how you could forgive me.
This year has been a lot, even enough for me. But I know it is not over yet. But I want to give you the world. I want you to be happy. I want to show you who I could be. Someone you could rely on. Someone you can always trust. I love you more then you can imagine. You are my pride and joy" Red you're so corny. I laughed. "Happy birthday."
Tears sprinting down my face I hear the floor outside the door creak. I look up from the bed.
I see Red standing in the doorway, hat in hand.
"Open the present," he said simply.
I reach into the bag and find a small box. I look up at him. He steps more into the room. I cry even more when I look into the black rectangular box to see an old silver necklace. I know this necklace. I saw it every day around my mother's neck. She wore it everywhere. It was a heart with the word hope engraved in the back. For some reason, my tears stop. I stand from my seat still holding the precious jewelry. He stood in front of me. "Where did you find it," I asked. My hands holding it gently, so afraid it will break.
"I took that and her wedding ring that night. I had both so I thought you should have it."
I turned my back to him and gave him the necklace. He draped my shoulder length hair over one shoulder and I hear the clasp of the necklace clip.
When I turn back around he smiles. I knew but I never knew how he felt. It's so confusing. But he is doing the best he knows how. I understand that now.
"Thank you," I say as I wrap my arms around him.
In the dim light of the desk lamp, I could see him relax. He is so tense all the time always guarded. But sometimes he lets that wall down for me. We both have walls that have been through a beating. They are weak yet still strong. If he can let him down maybe so can I too.
