Chapter 22 - Father and Son/ Yibo and Zhan's Mom

It is the ninth day of Yibo's vacation and this day Zhan and Yibo spend separately. Yibo is helping Zhan's mother with some errands at the humans today and Zhan is helping his father in his lab.

Zhan arranged all the new herbs his father had brought back from his last trip on the shelf and watched his father work on a new tincture. Zhan could not really concentrate. A question kept running through his mind and his father sensed it very clearly. "What's wrong my son?" He therefore asked him.

"Mhhh, dad, do you believe that Yibo can manage to break the curse?" Zhan asked thoughtfully.

"Well, I think he's strong enough to do it."

"I hope so."

"Of course. You fell in love with him, after all, and you don't want to lose him."

"Mhm. You know Dad. Even for me, this is strange. I've never felt this way about anyone before. That's probably why it scares me."

"It scares you?"

"Yes. What if he doesn't manage to break the curse? He'll forget about me and all that will be left in him is a feeling of emptiness. But what about me? Will I forget him too and also feel this emptiness inside me? However, I am not human and no one knows how your curse will affect me and what will happen to me."

"I understand what you are about my son. But if you really love Yibo, you should trust that he can do it."

"I want to and I do. But still I'm afraid, he does get confused and sees problems where there are none."

"Since you brought Yibo here and I know who he is, I've been working on a theory about how we could help him break the curse. But it's just a theory, and I'm far from sure it will work."

"Are you going to tell me about it?"

"Not yet. I have to find out a few things first. And when the time comes, I'll tell you. But, if my theory is correct, it will be hard for you my son. And I hope you'll be ready then."

"I'll do whatever it takes dad."

"I know. But still, it's going to be very hard for you."

"You dad?"

"Mhm?"

"Do you think Yibo's parents really love each other?"

"You're wondering if the curse skipped Yibo's dad or?"

"Yes."

"I don't think it skipped him. He just may not remember that there may have once been another woman in his life. That doesn't mean he doesn't love his current wife. She's just not his true love."

"He has Alzheimer's dementia, and I wonder if the curse is broken, if he would be able to remember without the disease."

"I don't know. However, I suspect that he would still not be able to remember his true love. To which I must also say that I am equally unaware of whether he has ever met his true love."

"So the curse could have skipped him?"

"Well, it's possible. But we can't say for sure. After all, he might not remember her anyway. My father always said that finding true love in one's life is very special. And it's so special because not everyone meets their true love."

"That's really sad."

"Sure. However, most people do find someone else they can or could love very much. And maybe it's the same with Yibo's father."

"You know, when I first met Yibo's parents, they seemed so sweet and kind. I couldn't imagine that those two people were so hard and never gave love to their children. Even more, they told their sons they existed only to carry on the bloodline and have heirs."
