It was just noon when Zhan woke up feeling a little hungry. He whispered in Yibo's ear, "I'm going to get something to eat and check on the animals. I'll be back soon."
"Is good honey. Have fun." Replied Yibo smiling with his eyes closed. Zhan smirked and gave him a kiss on the cheek and then quietly left the room.
When Zhan went downstairs, he saw Hai Kuan who was looking around the castle a bit. When Hai Kuan noticed him, he said, "Oh sorry. I just wanted to move around a little. I couldn't sleep anymore."
"It's all right. You're free to move around here anytime you want. Don't worry about it. Are you hungry? So I' m hungry." Replied Zhan cheerfully.
"Thanks. Mhm, I'm a little hungry too."
"Then come with me. I'm sure the cook has already prepared something for you." Said Zhan and led the way. Hai Kuan followed him to the dining room, where two servant homunculus immediately began to fetch food from the kitchen for Hai Kuan and arrange it on the table in front of Hai Kuan.
While Zhan drank his warmed blood and Hai Kuan began to eat, Hai Kuan wondered a little and said, "Somehow here it feels as if the modern world has collided with the Middle Ages and all this has come out of it. A castle where everything is at the most modern standard."
"I think if my dad had his way, the castle would still look like it did in the Middle Ages. Inside and out. But my mom likes it modern and fancy. She likes all these super high-tech things that weren't even thought of back then. She just can't get enough of it. But if you want and like medieval things, you should visit our little town with Yibo and me. There's nothing modern there and you'll feel like you're back in time between 500 and 1500. At least that's what Yibo says."
"You have a town like that? Why hasn't it been discovered by other people yet?"
"Because this castle, two villages and the small town are in a portal. You can think of it as traveling through a magical portal from your time, to another time. And people can only get there if they have a magic crystal key."
"I see. I think I saw such a key on Meng Yao, too. Is there more than this one portal?"
"Mhm. There are many such portals all over the world. But usually in these portals there are always small areas to be protected from the humans."
"From the humans?"
"Mhm. Humans are rarely open to vampires. They see us as a danger and they are afraid of us. And anything they're afraid of, they want to destroy."
"But not all humans think that way. Surely many are open-minded to new things by now?"
"Vampires are anything but new. And the history of vampires proves that humans will never accept us. Well, except for a tiny fraction. More vampires have been killed by humans than vampires by vampires or humans by vampires."
"Well, but... no, you're right. I think they would react just like you said. They're afraid of anything unknown and would want to kill you."
"Right. And that's why these portals exist. However, there are also vampires living among you humans. Vampires who can keep their existence secret."
"I see. Um, can I tell you something?"
"Sure."
"I was also shocked at first to learn that my little brother had become one of you vampires. I really disliked him at first because I thought of how Meng Yao and Su She are. I thought he was just like them now. But then I realized that he, you and your parents are completely different. I have never seen my brother so happy. He's in love, he's finally who he was always meant to be, and he's living a family life with you that he always wanted."
