December 2015, Moscow, Russia
a few days before Christmas

He walked around the market, clutching the bag in his strong hands.

It was a cold December day, frozen snow grinding under his heavy boots, the cap he wore pulled deep into his face. He mindfully watched the people around him going about their day, chatting with vendors, discussing deals over different produce.

It had been a good day when he woke up, the sun shining in his face trough the newspapers he had put on the windows of the small apartement he lived in.

The festive decoration of the market above his head put a lonely feeling in his chest. It was just a small image of a memory he had long lost.
He knew he had once liked this season a lot, but it was different now. His mind was...

The soldier shook his head, trying to keep his thoughts from wandering off too far in his past.

Not here. not now.

Not with the feeling of being watched.
The fine hairs on the back of his neck stood up.

Marie was so close to him she could inhale the smell of his odor.

Wood and gasoline creeping up her nose, paired with something else she couldn't make out.

She oppressed the urgent need of touching the back of the man's neck as she had done a hundred times before. Her fingers lingered over his skin not even an inch away.

It would cause too much of a scene snapping him right on the spot.

The dark-haired man turned around, vigiliant eyes going straight through the woman in front of him. He couldn't see her, but he felt the heat radiating from her body creeping up inside his chest.

His muscles tensed as he wrinkled his nose, taking in the smell of a flower bouquet made from peonies and jasmine.
He knew he had smelled it before, trying hard to catch that memory, but he couldn't reach it right away.

It slipped from his fingertips the second he tried to wrap them around. As if it didn't want to be found.

He shook his head, hardly noticeable for the people around him, telling himself he was being paranoid.

Having been on the run for so long took a toll on his already irritated mind.

Marie, on the other hand, stared into the dark blue eyes of the target in front of her, feeling herself drown in them once more.

She watched his brain work trough the fog of his mind, trying to process what little information was given to him. It almost made her snicker.

Playing her games, she crept around the soldier for another two days.

Keller never said he wanted it to be quick and easy.

He knew she loved confusing her targets for quite a bit of time. She enjoyed watching their minds work, trailing off into paranoia more and more the longer she stayed.
