Marie repeated the question one last time while looking the man dead in the eyes.
Bucky groaned in pain behind his back, but she didn't dare let her gaze drift off. He moved to sit back on his knees, breath still heavy from the piercing hurt rushing through his veins.
She felt her patience fade with every passing second the man in front of her kept his silence. He just looked at her.
The fire in the pit of Marie's stomach started to boil her blood. Her heart pounded heavily in her ears, and the anger rushing through her veins started to fog her brain.
"My name is Cheng." His answer was silent, barely a breath slipping from between his teeth. "You're Marie. I've heard a lot about you. My mother was quite fond of you."
Marie's heart dropped into the boiling pit of her stomach, melting like plastic over flame, but smelling so much worse. The smell of burning rubber suddenly settled in her nose, and she swallowed whatever it was her stomach tried to bring up. She stared at the man with shock and disbelief written all over her face.
The feeling clung onto her bones. Shaking her from the inside, M shivered as sadness and regret broke down on her like a tidal wave. Feilure nagged on her brain while she examined the man in front of her with her dark blue eyes.
That's why he loked so familiar. He had the same eyes as his mother; in shape, not in colour. Strong features on a structured face, cheeckbones and jaw oh so prominent. Dark hair. Caramel skin. The same tall, but slim frame. He looked a lot like her.
Bucky rose back to his full height behind the Asian man, flipping the knife between his fingers before he stepped up behind him and brought it up to his throat. The soldier was twice as broad as him, and his figure seemed to swallow the man's frame.
Marie saw Cheng gulp against the knife. A second too long as his skin pressed into the sharp blade, forming a thin, red line on his skin. Small droplets of blood running down his throat.
"Take your gun down" Bucky growled into his ear.
The soldier was so close his lips almost brushed the shell of Cheng's ear as he spoke. He held his metal arm wrapped around his neck tightly, his right hand pressing the sharp blade of his butterfly knife against his skin.
Cheng didn't move. The blade pressed into his skin with every breath he took, but still he didn't flinch. Breathing was the only move he made. Slowly and steady. In and out. All while his eyes didn't move away from the woman in front of him.
He felt numbness inside of him, thinking about the past few months when he told his mother repeatedly not to trust them. Just like she'd taught him. After all he'd heard about the Winter Soldier he knew that he alone was trouble enough. But what he heard about the woman at his side was something else.
"What are you going to do?" he finally asked. Numbness faded into sadness into anger "kill me like you killed my mother?"
Bucky tightened his grip around the Asian man's throat after the words had left his mouth. His darkened eyes clung onto his wife as he watched her facial expressions change within seconds. She let her guard down, unwillingly, and he stood there as a witness, unable to do anything about the way she felt.
Silence wavered around them for a few moments in which M just stared at Cheng. Then, suddenly, her arm sank down, lowering the gun from his forehead. Bucky felt the man's tension fade in an instant.
She tucked the gun back into the holster on her right thigh once again. With a quick movement of her hand the knives she'd thrown at Cheng when he attacked Bucky were back in her hands and neatly tucked between the black belt around her waist and her black jeans.
