Chapter Two
Dark as Day
Hailey Jane Rexler
I wasn't looking forward to school, I mean, what was there to look forward to? I didn't have any friends, I prefered to be alone. I was a lone wolf (and queue howl). At my school, I was a loner, I was the girl who no body talked to, but everyone talked about. I wasn't a sight for sore eyes, nor was I a total hag, perhaps somewhere in between. I had the average (not so average at our school of blonde bimbos) dark brown hair and plain green eyes. The only thing special about me, was that I was the only werewolf at our school, and I was perfectly fine with that. And it wasn't even like I didn't have friends at all, I had friends within my pack.
You see, I didn't even bother attempting to make friends with the humans at our school. I mean, have you seen the football jocks? They're dumb as bricks and shallow as kiddie pools! Besides, I only went to enough classes to get my credits, and the teacher's didn't give a shit. You know why? Because I tested well, and that's all that matters. I wouldn't show up for class, but when test time and exams rolled round I aced them, as far as I was concerned I was good as gold. I had good marks and a stable position in the North pack.
Being mysterious and kick-ass had it's advantages and disadvantages as well. The advantages were that I could do whatever I liked and people would accept it. Down side? The rumours. I've heard them all by now, but every so often I hear a new one to chuckle by myself about. There was one where I got sent to prison in the summer for stealing money from a bank three towns over. Then there was the one that spiralled off of that one, saying that I got pregnant in prison and aborted the baby because I couldn't support a kid with a life of crime and protest against society. I know! Where do they get this stuff? I'll tell you straight up, the results of hormones, drugs and alchohol are certainly not unimaginative.
I was walking down the hallways, ditching class as per usual, and running my fingers along the lockers whilst humming a random tune. I tapped the beat up metal doors with my fingers along to the beat of the clicking of my favourite pair of converse. I had just passed the Sci and Tech classes and was about to stroll by World History and Gym A. A small plucky nerd caught my gaze, I glared at him and he looked like he was about to throw-up. I laughed to myself as he scurried off, nearly tripping over his own feet and dropping his books. I was preoccupied as I finished up my stroll, when a large force slammed into my head.
My head began to pulsate with immense pain. I groaned as a massive headache reached my central nervous center. My whole body ached as my head throbbed. I pulled myself up into a half-bent position. I swear, whatever hit me was concussion worthy! I looked beside me to see if I could find any evidence of who had hit me, but all I saw was the west wing doors. Wait... some idiot had hit me with a door and ran!?! Hell no! I rubbed at my head to search for any outer damage. I groaned in pain as I rubbed a sore spot where a bruise or bump would surely form.
Suddenly, the wolf in me sensed a presence beside me. I glanced up. Like I thought. The criminal always returns to the scene of the crime. And who was it? Only one of the biggest hotshot idiots in the whole school... Drew Holiday. My wolf was just begging for me to let out a vicious snarl to scare him off. But the rational human side of me advised me that that would be extremely stupid and immature, because humans like this lukhead would cue in and realize that people can't growl like wolves and something was up. Soon I picked up on the fact that his group of football goonies had caught up with him and were standing behind him dumbfounded. What a bunch of airheads.
I looked up at Drew. This was the sort of guy that ran for class president and showed up to evry class unless he was sick or making out with some slut in a closet. He was captain of both the football, baseball and basketball teams and every girl wanted him and every guy wanted to be him. He was everybody's best friend! Not. I for one despised him and his idiots. Well, I could understand why he was so popular. He was good looking and never said no to anyone. He had dark brown hair that was only a couple shades off of black, and it was messy and permanently tousled, it was the kind of hair that looked effortless but completely neat at the same time. He had the type of icy blue eyes that would show his emotion no matter what his mouth said, and right now, he was either confused or scared, and for me, either was fine. He was toned and tanned and was wearing one of those plain white v-necks with sunglasses on the neckline. I can honestly say I hate guys in v-necks, but he pulled it off fairly well. He just looked at his friends, and back to me all speechless. As he did so, our gazes met and I felt an odd buzz so I looked away quickly. He extended his hand towards me nervously.
'Sorry,' I said, rejecting his offer as I dusted my butt off. 'But I don't need your help.' I turned on my heels and walked away. For a moment I used my extrasensitive hearing to pick up on what they were saying.
'I think you pissed her off,' the one with the short sandy blonde hair said.
'Lord help me,' Drew said. Then I tuned out, because frankly, that was all I needed to hear to know I'd left the right impression.

I sighed as I set my school bag down on the kitchen table. My mother looked up from her magazine and smiled at me. She was always happy, Dad and I had that kind of effect on her.
'You hungry honey?' she asked.
'Not really,' I said sweetly. You see, I was only a bad-ass bitch at school, at home and with the pack I was the real me. I was nice and calm.
'You sure dear?' she asked setting her magazine down on the table and tucking a strand of auburn hair behind her ear.
'Yup,' I said smiling. It was always a releif to be home. 'Where's Dad?'
'He's in the board room with some of the other men,' she said. I sighed.
'What now?' I asked.
'They're discussing our meeting with the South pack next week,' she said. I groaned.
'Can't we just write a treaty?' I asked. She stared at me like I was crazy.
'Honey, they've been pretty disagreeable on their own,' she said. 'And when you're Alpha you'll understand the responsibilities that come along with a pack.'
'Oh yeah,' I muttered. 'I forgot about the whol Alpha thing.' I groaned. 'When do I have to do that again?'
'When you find your mate Hails,' she said. Stupid mate, never wanted one, never will.
'Can't I be a mateless Alpha?' I asked.
'Sweety, you're the only female Alpha in history and you're saying you want to do it without a mate supporting you?' she asked.
'Yup, pretty much,' I said.
'Honey, when you get a mate you'll understand.' she said.
'What if I don't want a mate?' I said. She just chuckled.
'Good luck with explaining that to your mate.' she said as she went back to her magazine.
