Chapter Seven

Orders

Drew Holiday

Battle tactics are exausting. You just run and jump and lunge and bite, over and over again! You kept repeating the attack and defense patterns until you were so worn out that you could barely shift. Why? Because father didn't trust that we'd do it on our own accord, so it was like werewolf boot camp. I managed to summon up enough energy to shift and slump back to the house. I collapse on the large leather lazy boy couch and sighed, letting out my exasperation for the world to know. I was so tired, I felt like groaning, but couldn't find the will. I was about to doze off when I heard a whisper.

'It's alright,' the whisper said. It sound so sweet and melodical, and vaguely familiar. It was almost like the wind and it came from the window. 'Don't be afraid.' It whispered. Was it talking to me? I was sure it was, but it didn't feel like it. 'You're a beautiful wolf.' It said. I made my way out to the second level deck as the wind whipped around me. So it was talking about my wolf. I felt the sudden need to shift, so I did exactly that. 'I'm over here...' it whispered again. 'On the other side of the lake.' I found myself strangely attracted to the source of the voice. I followed it's directions, but ended up at the border. Coincidentally the same place I smelt the enticing scent. I sudden'y realized that something that I couldn't see or smell had led me here, and things like that are never good. I suddenly felt on edge. I shouldn't be at the border, it isn't safe for me, it isn't right. I turned and began to head back towards the house. Despite the constant signals my body was sending me to stay. The wind whipped around me furiously, entangling my fur with its cool touch. I shiver. 'Stay...' it hissed sadly. 'Stay with me.' It said, I suddenly felt entitled to stay and make sure the voice was happy. It was kind of scary. I snapped out of it and kept going, the wind whipping around my paws and the forest floor around me. 'Please... don't leave me...' After that it took all my will power to make my way back home. I reentered the lounge and fell onto the couch exausted, all my friends were asleep any way.

I woke up feeling like a million bucks! Not. I felt drained of all my energy and groaned as I straigtened myself out. I suddenly lost all balance and fell off the couch. I groaned as my back ached from the fall. I heard laughing and looked over to see Danny eating a bowl of cereal and watching Spongebob.

'Dude, you're a wreck.' he laughed. 'What were you up to last night?'

'I really don't know...' I muttered.

'Well whatever it is, you need to put it behind you,' he said. 'We have school, remember?' he teased.

'Thanks for the heads up captain,' I said saluting him and pulling myself up. I groaned and grabbed a pair of board shorts and a black v-neck. Despite the fact that my system was 100% alchohol free, I felt like I had a hangover. I grabbed a pair of sunglasses and put them on.

'Drew, were you drinking?' Sam asked confused as he came in from the kitchen.

'No, but it feels like it...' I groaned massaging my head.

'Are you sure you're okay?' Kenny asked, apparently he had just appeared as well.

'I honestly have no clue...' I muttered. We made our way out to the car and sped to school. We were about to park in our regular spot, when I noticed that a tough-looking motorcycle was parked in our spot. 'Who the hell...' I muttered. Then I saw the liscence plate: HJREX. Hailey Jane Rexler, of course, the girl who doesn't give a shit has now decided that my spot belongs to her. Wonderful. I groaned and found a different spot, which happened to be about twice the distance further from the school than my usual spot. I rushed to my art class, about ten minutes late. What a wonderful start to the day! I thought. I pushed through the door of Room 311 and rushed to an empty seat.

'Mr. Holiday,' Mrs. Feather said shaking her frizzy bun disappointedly. 'You're late.' she said.

'Sorry, it's just that -' I stared.

'No excuses,' she said. 'Just don't let it happen again.' she said. I nodded and got to painting. I can honestly say I sucked at it, but I need art for extra credit. I started painting some odd blobish shape that looked a bit like a flower, which was good because that's what I was aiming for. But, it was still suckish enough to only deserve a B at the most. I looked in front of me to see an amazing scene on a mountain. It was gorgeous. I instantly felt jealous, I mean, how can some people have talent like that and others can only paint blobs like me? There were small yellow flowers blooming all over the mountain side and a small stream was running down the rocky breaks. I suddenly felt the urge to tap the artist on the back.  I tapped their shoulder and they turned around.

'Yes?' Hailey asked rather annoyed. She was holding a paint brush with black paint on it and she was twiddling her fingers nervously. What was wrong with her?

'You uh... took my spot this morning.' I commented.

'Oh.' she said. 'Nice to know.' she said sarcastically, about to turn around.

'I like your painting.' I said. She raised an eyebrow and peeked over my easel at my painting. 'I uh... like your... fire hydrant?' she said.

'It's supposed to be a flower.' I said trying to look upset.

'Oh uh... sorry?' she said looking really embarrassed. I burst out laughing. 'What?' she glared at me.

'You should've seen your face,' I said. 'I already know I'm a sucky painter.' I glanced back at her painting. 'Is it done.' She stared at the black paint on her paint brush that was in her hand. She twiddled it around and stared at her painting.

'Uh...yeah.' she said, sounding fairly unsure of herself. I just nodded and went back to my flower/fire hydrant. I watched her start painting again, I thought she was done. After a while she stopped and cleaned up her supplies. She groaned in frustration as she stared at her painting... I don't get it. Why was she upset? It was good.

'What's wrong?' I asked. She jumped in her seat.

'What?' she said. 'Um...ah... it's uh... nothing. It happens a lot is all.' The bell rang and she was literally the first person out. She really was weird...
