Chapter Fifteen

Compromise

Drew Holiday

I sat there on the couch. Hailey was sound asleep. I watched her chest rise up and down. I had the urge to take a piece of her hair and stroke it behind her ear as it fell in front of her eyes. But I couldn't touch her. It wasn't right. I don't even think we were together at this point, there was just too much going on. Father was in the board room, discussing the issue with the pack. There were upsides and downsides to having her here. But all I could focus on was the very fact that she was here. She looked so at peace, but every so often she'd stir, indicating that there was some bother in her subconcious dream world. I didn't want there to be a bother for her... ever.

On the upside; my father was happy I'd found my mate, she was a decent person (other than the fact that I knew nothing about her) and she would be a powerful asset to the pack. On the downside hower; her father was pissed at us, not her. That meant that the entire North pack was pissed at us, not her and we had nothing to do about it. I'm not even sure why we fought. If Hailey and I decided to... mate, then our two packs would be joined regardless of what they wanted. Hailey and I would assume the position of co-Alphas and then everyone would be mad at the two of us. I got up of the couch, feeling the strain on my chest. It hurt to leave her sleeping on the couch alone at this point, it was pretty shocking, I'm not going to lie. Just as I made my way into the board room, everyone stopped still. We all turned towards the window.

'Someone's on our land.' Danny said. I nodded in agreement.

'Rogues?' Kenny suggested venomously. Everyone growled, if there was one thing we hated more than the North pack, it was rogues.

'No, someone from the Norht.' My father said. I leapt up. They better not be here to take her from me! They sent her away! It was their damn mistake! She's mine! Whether she wants to be or not! I rushed out in the living room, and sighed in releif. Hailey was still there. She stirred in her sleep and woke up, rubbing her eyes.

'What do you want Holiday...' she looked at the clock. 'It's three in the morning! Have you gone off your rocker or something?!?' she aksed angrilly. I felt like looking down ashamed, but I stood my ground.

'One of yours is on our land.' I said.

'One of mine...' she said confused. Her eyes lit up. She ran out on to the deck. When she spotted the figure she grinned at him, it was a boy with curly blonde hair. 'Tanner!' she shouted happily. She ran down the wooden stairs of the second story deck and ran to him, engulfing him in a huge hug. My chest twinged. Who was he? He looked older than us, and I'd never seen him at John Pope. He couldn't be her brother, she was an only child. Was this one of her college boyfriends? The thought of this didn't settle well with me. She couldn't have another man in her life before me, it didn't seem right. But I'd had Kristy, and tons of other girls before her... but they didn't matter now. I still had to break up with Kristy any how. I just stared at the pair. I cleared my throat and they turned towards me, taking a break from their little reuinion.

Oh, Drew...' she said, like she'd forgotten I was there. 'This is my best mate Lucy's mate Tanner.' she said. It felt like a great weight was lifted from my chest. 'Tanner this is Drew, my uh... kind of almost friend. Aquaintance?' she said. I felt like she had just taken her fist and crushed my heart with it, but I just nodded in agreement. We weren't much more than aquaintances in reality.

'I've come with a compromise.' Tanner said.

'And what would that be?' I asked.

'Peter sent me.' he said. I growled.

'Then feel free to leave.' I said coldly. 'Actually, it's an order.'

'I have to relay his message first.' he said.

'This is our land. Don't forget that you're the one intruding.' I said.

'Isn't Hails intruding as well then?' he asked raising an eyebrow. I turned towards her in suprise. She hadn't corrected him when he called her Hails. She never let me call her Hails.

'No, she isn't.' I said.

'Well, that's hardly reasonable at all, she's more of a threat than I am.' he said. Hailey laughed and smiled at him; like she knew this was true.

'Whatever,' I grimaced. 'Say what you have to say then.' I said.

'Peter says that he'll sign that truce of yours if you give Hailey back.' Tanner said. I almost snapped.

'Give her back?!?' I said. 'We haven't taken her!' I said. 'She came here on her own free will! You sent her away!'

'Irrelevant,' he rolled his eyes. 'That's the preposition.'

'No.' I said.

'Are you sure?' Tanner asked. 'Shouldn't you ought to consult your Alpha?'

'Hailey's mine, I decide what's best for her.' I said. I don't know what had come over me. Hailey looked at me annoyed.

'I'm not yours!' she proteseted. 'I'm not anybodies!' I stared into her eyes dominantly.

'You sure about that?' I asked her. She looked down, away from my intense stare. 'Alright then.'

'So?' Tanner said.

'Still no.' I rebuttled.

'Please.' he said, suddenly in an urgent tone. Seeing that I wasn't changing my mind. I shifted uncomfortably, this was odd.

'I don't think so...' I said.

'This is the best option for her.' he pleaded scaredly. What was he scared of. He looked behind him anxiously.

'In what way?' I asked. He stepped forward, and hissed to me under his breath.

'It just is.' he said. 'If you don't hand her over... they'll do it for you.' he said, his eyes black with worry.

'Who?' I asked. 'Your pack?'

'No.' he said cold as ice and dead as night.

'Then who?' I asked urgently. If it wasn't their pack who was it? If Hailey was in danger I needed to know!

'Please, just let her come with me!' he pleaded.

'No.' I said. Suddenly a bunch of scratchy howls erupted in the night, their echoing chaos scratching at my bones and my insides. Making me cringe in disgust. They were hard untamed songs of the night. Tanner frowned sadly and looked at Hailey, then back to me.

'You've made a poor desicion.' he told me. 'It won't work out for the best... it never does when you deal with them.' he said blankly. 'You've left her fate in their hands now.' he said. Then he shifted and ran off into the forest, gone in the night. Hailey looked at me worriedly. More empty evil howls filled the night, they seemed to be laughing at the horror of it all. What had I done?
