Kalypso is walking home from school when she hears a shout behind her.
"Hey! Wait up!"
She looks back. A guy from her class, Damon, she's pretty sure, is running after her.
"Yes?"
"I, uh, was wondering if I could, um, walk home with you?"
She smiles. "Yes of course."
They walk silently for a few minutes then he just blurts out, "I noticed you are sad a lot..why what's wrong?"
She's taken aback-she thought nobody noticed her pain. And why would Damon even care?
"It's nothing. Why do you care?"
He blushes. "I, uh, well, um...I just don't like seeing people unhappy and I want to help," he mumbles.
She grins, he's obviously uncomfortable and nervous. "Thank you but there's nothing you can do to help me."
This is true of course- at least he can't help the way he wanted to. The only way to help her was to kill her so she could go back home. But it was sweet of him for trying- and she tells him so.
"Oh I'm not just 'trying' I'm actually going to help."
This will get out of hand soon..a bit of niceness was ok but she can't afford to come too close to anyone. Not when she will probably leave soon...she can't hurt anybody like that. Plus its not like he actually cares, once he realizes how broken and messed up she is he'd abandon her.
So, she does what she has to, and nicely but firmly tells him he can't help her and to just give up now.
But even though she told him to, as he walks away, she still feels a bit of pain in her heart, as if she was hoping he wouldn't listen and he'd stay- what is she thinking?! No. It's a good thing he walked away, both for his sake and her own.

That night as she lay in bed, her thoughts drifted back to Damon. Had he really meant that he wanted to help? No. If he did he wouldn't have left her, he would have tried harder. He was just being nice. A little voice in her head whispers, maybe he does care. He noticed your sadness even through your act of being happy. But every other part of her attacks back at that thought. No he doesn't care! She probably just let her guard down a second too long and he just happened to glance at her then, and maybe she'd been nice to him before so her felt like he owed her?
Just then she heard a tapping sound on her window. She sat upright and glanced out. What-or who-was it? What if someone was after her and wanted to kidnap her or something?
"Kalypso," called a voice softly.
It was someone coming after her! What should she do? Hopefully if she screamed people would hear her and come running before he could take her away. She opened her mouth and-
"Wait!" cried the voice. A face appeared in the window. She startled. The face belonged to...
