In the year 1994, when Aaliyah and Brandy's debut albums were released, Brandy reportedly made comments about the way that Aaliyah dressed, calling it "tacky."
In the 90s, Aaliyah was known for wearing baggy jeans and half-shirts, showcasing her midriff, which Brandy said was "a little too grown" and that her own mother would never approve of it.
Aaliyah was asked about this in an interview and she refused to talk about it, telling the interviewer that she doesn't dwell on negativity.
Later on at an award show, Brandy shouted Aaliyah out during a speech. The two of them eventually met and became good friends, supporting eachother in their personal and professional life's.
In 2011 on the ten year anniversary of Aaliyah's death, Brandy told The Juice of Aaliyah, "She was the first girl on the scene. She came out before Monica and I did, and she was our inspiration."
