Some Things Go Unsaid

I jump out of Stiles' Jeep, followed by both of the boys, who each have a shovel in hand. We start making our way to the Hale house, half of the house missing and charred.

"Wait...somethings different." Scott speeds up to catch up to Stiles and I, with urgency in his voice.

"Like what?"

"I don't know..." he responds, while aiming his shovel toward a spot in the dirt, shrugging.

"Let's just get this over with." Stiles says, lifting his shovel up and slamming it into the dirt.

I grab a small, handheld gardening shovel out of my tote bag. Both boys stop and look at me for a second, disbelief on their faces. "It's all I had!" They roll their eyes and get back to digging, and I join in, barely making a dent with my spoon-sized shovel.

"I still can't believe you guys made out." Scott laughs, while throwing dirt over his shoulder.

"Oh don't act like you and Stiles haven't done it before to 'see how it feels'." Stiles quickly inhales and starts choking on his spit after hearing my comment. I continue, despite the fact that he is standing there coughing his lungs out. "And besides, we did it to not get in trouble, It didn't mean anything." I smile at Stiles as if i were saying 'right?'. He softly smiles back, before dropping the expression and turning away.

My eyes make their way to Scott, who is clearly focusing on either someone's scent or heartbeat, while staring at Stiles. I watch as his face twists in confusion, as if he were about to say, "huh?". I shrug it off and get back to 'helping' them dig.

"This is taking way too long." Scott says, letting out a long sigh.

"Yeah, um, Stiles?" He turns his head to me, "Did you think of a plan for how to get out if Derek comes back?"

"Actually, yes!" I hear his heartbeat jump at the lie he just told. "Maeve, you run forward - try not to fall into the hole while doing so - Scott, you run left, I will run right."

"I hate that plan." Scott responds while continuing to shovel.

"Yeah, me too." I wipe my hand across my face, forgetting that there is dirt all over my hand. I leave a streak of dirt on my sweaty forehead, and don't bother wiping it off.

I hear Stiles' shovel make a clunk sound, and my stomach turns. "Was that your shovel hitting a dead body?" I ask, hoping my demeanor stays calm so I don't stress anyone out.

"I believe so." Stiles responds, pulling open the burlap sack that his shovel just hit. Scott joins in, untying the knots of twine that are holding the burlap sack closed. I step back, trying as hard as I can to avoid seeing a rotting body.

"What the hell is that?" Stiles asks, jumping back out of the hole.

"A wolf."

"It doesn't make sense. You said you smelled human blood?" I ask, slowly moving my body over the hole and peeking at the dead wolf buried in the dirt.

"I told you guys something was different!" He says, trying to defend himself.

"We need to get out of here. Let's go back to my car."

"Yeah, okay. Maeve, Stiles, help me cover this back up."

I reluctantly jump into the 'grave' and grab handfuls of dirt with my hands, worrying about the possible bugs that are now on my skin. I cringe at the thought, and start quickly throwing dirt over the wolf, trying to get it done as fast as possible.

"You guys see that flower?"

"That's wolfsbane." I respond, not changing my expressions. Stiles looks at me, clearly questioning how I knew this. "I took a botany class online last year."

"I always learn new things about you!" Scott smiles proudly, and I can't resist mirroring his expression back at him.

While I was paying attention to Scott, Stiles had grabbed the plant and started tugging it out of the dirt. I watch as he pulls a rope out of the ground in a circular motion, until it is fully out.

"Stiles..." Scott is now staring down at my feet. I gulp and start slowly turning my head to the wolf, praying that it didn't just awake from the dead. Instead, i'm met with the body that I had seen a few nights before. Stiles jumps back and grabs onto Scott, letting out a small yell.

I stare at half of a body, my feet inches away from a hand. The air in the woods fills my lungs before I let out a blood curdling scream, nearly ripping my vocal chords apart. I feel my throat start to go dry as Scott covers his ears, desperately trying to block out the sound of my scream. I feel two hands hook onto my under arms and pull my body out of the hole. Once I'm out of the makeshift grave, the same hands spin me away from the sight of the body and cover my mouth.

"Stop! Derek is gonna hear us!" Stiles yells over my voice. I stop screaming and he slowly un-cups his hand from my mouth. "We need to go. Now."

I grab onto Scott's hand and start running after Stiles to the car. Scott is still squinting his eyes in pain, trying to get the ringing out of his ears. We all jump into the car, and the wheels peel off the side of the road, making their way onto the concrete.

"Where did you get this sudden ability to scream louder than a goddamn explosion?!" He groans, rubbing his hand across one of his ears. "That was ear piercing!"

"I don't know, Lydia used to do the same thing when we were younger though." I respond, my hands still shaking from seeing the dead body. "I remember, once she saw a spider and screamed so loud that a glass cup broke."

"Holy shit!" Stiles responded, obviously impressed.

I ignore Stiles' enthusiasm over my sisters vocals, and ask him a question. "Hey Stiles, can you drop me off at my house? Lydia and I are going up to the lake house for a few days."

"During the week? There's school." He says, keeping his eyes on the road.

"Yeah, well, Lydia thought I should take a few days away from school since everyone is talking about me right now." I respond.

I don't want to deal with everyone asking me how I was dying a day before and then showed up the next morning. Maybe I can say that Lydia and I are actually triplets, and I have an identical twin who was the one who got attacked. Yeah I'll call her...Dahlia.

Yeah, No one will buy that.

I feel Stiles' Jeep come to a halting stop in front of my house, and I grab my backpack and hop out. Stiles rolls down his window, and I give him a quick hug before making my way around the front of the car to Scott. he reaches out and hugs me and I start talking, my voice muffled in his shirt. "I will be back for the game and bowling afterwards, love you!" I run off towards my house.

"Love you too!" He yells out while the car moves away from my house.

The one thing that I've come to notice throughout the years of knowing Stiles is that we have never said 'I love you' to each other. Instead, Stiles likes to show that he loves someone by doing literally anything for them. There's a reason he was willing to dig up a dead body in the woods for Scott.

Sometimes I wonder if we will ever say it to each other, but it's the kind of thing that goes without saying.
