It is the first day for twenty-four-year-old rookie agent, Jessie Burle-Marx, in the Office at Fort Kristina. She is assigned the cubicle next to Jake von Verra's workshop.

During working hours, Burle-Marx barely has a chance to interact with anyone, as it is an unusually hectic day for everyone else. Therefore, when the workday ends, Brigadier Dauisse decides to invite Burle-Marx, along with von Werra and Captain Judd Kember to a local pub for a pint to allow everyone to better acquaint themselves with the new rookie.

Dauisse tries to interest the others in a book called The Rise of Alien Contact by Dr. Kumar. However, the Brigadier is interrupted and leaves the room to take a phone call. von Werra follows him hurriedly, and Kember tells Burle-Marx that he suspects the call is from agents in Nouvelle-Angoulême.
