Jake von Werra meets Jessie Burle-Marx in the morning. At first, von Werra rambles about when it is acceptable to work on the Sabbath day. Then he insists Burle-Marx accompanies him to a neighbourhood in Nouvelle-Angoulême.

They travel by train from Fort Kristina to Haberman station. Werra leads Burle-Marx to a near-by plastic doll factory. Werra chats briefly with a security guard, Dayton Wisce. One of the guard dogs has given birth to a litter. Werra insists on taking one puppy. Werra and Burle-Marx depart with the puppy and go to an Office branch location in Nouvelle-Angoulême.

Once at the location, von Werra phones three local agents to the laboratory to study the puppy. The ostentatious behavior of the local agents repulses Burle-Marx. However, she finds herself fascinated by the lurid spectacle of their experiments on the puppy. The puppy becomes enraged, and the group discovers it is (infected by an extraterrestial parasite) possessed by an alien consciousness. The puppy attacks and von Werra uses a short deft aikido move to subdue the puppy.
