Bryten Jackson stepped out of his office and winced. The cleaning staff used a little bit too much cleaner on the floors. It smelled like a lemon orchard, instead of a behavioral therapy ward. He hoped the smell wore off before the new patients family arrived. They seemed a little uptight and Bryten had not decided if he was going to accept their daughter into the program yet. Bryten and his family owned an entire wing in a small Tennessee hospital. It was a behavioral management wing where patients were treated for disorders such as, Anorexia. Bulimia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or Bi-Polar Management. The patients would have to undergo a series of test to prove they were not suicidal or a danger to others and then they were admitted. They would stay for a minimum of six months to a maximum of eighteen months.
Bryten turned the corner and walked into something very small. It took him a minute to realize the very small thing, was a very small someone and he reached down to pick them up.
“Sorry, Dr. Bryten. I didn’t mean to bump into you.”
Bryten recognized the voice.
“That is ok Sammy, I didn’t see you. It was my fault, but why are you out of your room honey?” Bryten asked.
Between the hours of twelve p.m. and seven a.m. the patients were to stay in their rooms. The doors were locked with an automatic system and would only unlock during those hours unless a staff member unlocked the doors or the emergency system let them out.
“Mrs. Eva set me to see if we had any extra towels in the supply closet.” she replied.
Bryten smiled. Eva was his sister and loved to let the patients help her with things. She worked as a nurse in the wing, just like the majority of his family. His brother served as the night shift doctor and his other sister Kasey, served as the night shift nurse. His mother worked in reception along with a few other loved staff members.
“Oh, well I appreciate you helping her Sammy.” Bryten told the young girl.
Sammy smiled.
“Did Dr. Jacob tell you I gained two pounds?” she asked excitedly as she jumped up and down making her long blond hair bounce.
“I have not seen him this morning, but I am very proud of you. That is a great accomplishment.” he praised her.
She smiled and went to retrieve the towels.
Sammy had been here three months and she was being treated for Anorexia. She was making a great turn around and Bryten was so relieved. This wing had been opened for three years and so far they had a 100% success rate. A few patients had come back to go through the program again, but most finished and were leading normal lives.
