In The Woods

Chapter 9

This is the most beautiful place I've ever seen. I look right and left. There's acres and acres of......land. Beautiful green grass. There's wild flowers that grow all around in different spots. I start running around. There are no houses here. I don't even know where we are. All we did was walk through the woods and we're in a whole new place. Like we went through the wardrobe in that movie, Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe. This is amazing.
It doesn't feel like we took that long to get here. I look down at my neon green watch. What the heck!?! Two hours have already passed. We were in the woods two hours? It sure doesn't feel like it!
I notice a little stream to my left. Without thinking, I run up to it and Ashley and Julia follow. I wish you could see it. This place is amazing.
I look down the stream. This is totally out of a movie! I see three deers drinking out of the stream. Little fish are swimming around. But someone has to own this place. As I look around, I suddenly feel a hand on my back. Before I can react, I'm pushed into the water.
I want to see how deep this goes. I swim down. 8 feet, 10 feet, 12 feet. This stream is about 14 feet deep. I swim up because I can't hold my breath any longer.
"Josie! When you didn't come up, we thought we drowned you," Ashley screams. I cough. I fake cry. "Why would you do that?" I ask.
"Josie we're so sorry!! We didn't mean to hurt you please forgive us," Julia says.
"GOT CHA," I say. Ashley playfully punches my arm. "That's not funny! We thought we hurt you!"
We swim to the other side of the stream. It's kind of weird. This is definitely a stream. It's a narrow body of water that flows slowly. There's little rocks and stuff. But it's as deep as a pond.
Ashley stops and points.
Julia and I turn. We see a red sign posted to a tree. Farther back, behind the sign, there's a tiny brown house. I get closer to read the sign.

THIS IS PRIVATE PROPERTY. STAY OFF MY LAND. ANYONE FOUND WILL BE SHOT ON SIGHT.

And with that, Ashley, Julia, and I turn and bolt back to the woods.
"Too bad we can't go back there. It was so pretty," Julia says. Ashley and I agree with her.
"It doesn't say we can't come back. It just says stay off this land or whatever," I say. "So, we can go back whenever we want. We just can't get caught."
Ashley and Julia look at me like I'm crazy. "Come on guys. We've spent most of our summers exploring my woods." I lower my voice for the next part. "All we've found is that document. No place exciting and beautiful like this. If you really like this place, how 'bout we come back. It's like our own special spot."
They both nod. I like how I can be persuasive.
It's starting to get dark. Although it doesn't seem like it, we've been here most of the day. And I love that.
