"I can't believe I'm doing this." Sarah sighed.
Sarah didn't like saying goodbye. Farewells felt permanent, like saying goodbye indicated that she'd never see them again.
Sarah gently brushed Nyssa's hair. When she combed Nyssa's bangs away from her eyes, she couldn't help but be reminded how young Nyssa was. Nyssa was still a child. She aged up physically and looked the same as a young teen. But Sarah still remembered her as the young child who was always latched to Erica's hip.
"Honestly I shouldn't be doing this. I've never been good at saying goodbye. Seth always had an easier time saying goodbye than I did. He's always been good at keeping his emotions in check." Sarah half-smiled.
Deep down, Sarah missed her brother. She hadn't seen him in over a month and had no idea how he was handling everything. The last time they talked, she was on death's door.
Sarah knew how worried Seth could get. She hoped he wasn't beating himself up over everything that happened.
"When you see Seth again can you give him a message for me?" Sarah asked.
Nyssa tilted her head curiously. She wasn't in a position to say no. Sarah had always been kind to her. Among Ren's friends, she liked Sarah and Suzume the most. "Sure, what is it?"
Sarah dropped her hand. "Tell him I'm doing fine. He doesn't need to worry about me. Ren saved my life and everyone has done their best to keep me safe."
Nyssa smiled somewhat. She didn't expect Sarah's message to be so simple, but sometimes there was beauty in simplicity. "Anything else?"
Sarah thought about it. There were so many things she wanted to say. Sarah wanted to tell him that she loved him. But she figured it'd be better to say it in person.
"Tell him that I'll be seeing him soon." Sarah promised.
Nyssa nodded silently, seemingly accepting her role as the messenger. She walked over to Sarah's bed and sat down lightly, kicking her legs along the edge of the bed. It was times like this that she was reminded of how short she was.
Unlike her parents, Nyssa didn't inherit their powerful stature. Erica's amazonian lineage gave her brawny features, defined muscles, and unrivaled beauty. She was like a goddess trapped in human flesh. Itsuki, on the other hand, stood taller than most men. In their first encounter, Nyssa could tell he was a hardened warrior. If his toned physique wasn't already telling, then his cold presence would be enough. Itsuki possessed eyes sharp enough that they could kill. Just from his demeanor, Nyssa knew he had little value for human life.
Nyssa stared at her feet. She wondered if she'd grow as tall as her parents? Was something like that still possible for her? Nyssa knew her genes were tampered with by Winston. Even as a dragon, Nyssa felt different. She felt stronger than before, and she could control the elements through fierce roars, an ability she didn't possess before.
"Are you nervous?" Sarah asked, joining her on the bed.
"No." Nyssa said absently. "What would I have to be nervous about?"
"Anything really," Sarah answered. "Maybe you're nervous about seeing Erica again?"
Nyssa sighed. Sarah hit the nail on the head. Sometimes she hated how good Sarah's intuition was. She was too observant for her own good.
"I'm not nervous about that." Nyssa admitted. "Well, not entirely."
"Then what is it?" Sarah asked. She played with her hair combing it away and making her lion-paw earrings visible. "Oh, I know." Sarah hid her mouth with her hand. "Are you nervous to see Seth again?"
