The day my life changed forever...
"No, no! There's no need for-" "Mr. L/N, you have the right to remain silent," the police officer sternly told him. I ran up to my dad, confused and scared-- wondering why he was being arrested. "Dad!" I called out for him, running as fast as I could, yet mindful of the ice on the driveway. The officer held his hand out, keeping me a fair distance away from my dad.
"Sweetie, I'm gonna need you to step away..." His voice was wary, but he remained calm overall. "Don't take away my dad," I screamed. I ducked the officer's hand and wrapped my arms around Dad's waist. I held him close. He couldn't hug me back due to his handcuffed wrists. "Y/N, you have to let me go," he whispered to me. I buried my teary eyes in his chest and shook my head.
"They think you're dangerous. Do what they say." I looked up from his shirt, finally noticing the many police cars that were surrounding our house. Ten. The police officers stood outside of the cars, aiming their guns at my dad and I. Were they regular guns? Or taser guns?
I was too far away to tell. I shook my head again, mumbling an "I don't care" as I brought my face back into Dad's body. I was only nine years old.
There was no way I was capable of being dangerous. Right? "That's enough. Come with me, sweetie," the officer interrupted. "No, no, no," I cried. He placed a hand on my shoulder."DON'T!" I slapped his hand away as hard as I could. An orange blast of energy surged through my hand just as it make contact with his. His body flew backwards at a rapid speed until he hit the snowy ground.
"Samson!" one officer yelled out from her car. The officer-- apparently named Samson-- held his chest. His eyes were wide and he was hyperventilating. I looked away from the man I hurt and stared into my dad's eyes."He- he was gonna..." I tried to explain to Dad, but he promptly shushed me. I let go of him, beginning to cry again. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean- I- It was an accident!" Tears rolled down my cheeks, burning as they settled on my face in the freezing cold air. "Y/N, look at me," Dad said.
"You're special in every way possible. I love you so much. You'll be able to see me again one day." I sniffled, wiping my tears away. Dad looked around and knelt to meet my eye level. "Soon your... grandfather will pick you up and take care of you. Just wait. But make sure that nobody sees you."I held onto his words for the rest of my life.
The next few moments were a blur of grief. I remember that the other officers eventually took away my dad. I gave up and let them. I only knew that I would cause more people to get hurt. The officers let me go inside my house to pack a bag of anything I wanted to take with me to "the facility". I don't remember anything more about "the facility", only that they were gonna take me there.
I put on a coat for the cold and packed a few toys in a backpack. As I searched in my room for more things to pack, I found it. The polaroid camera that Dad got me for my birthday. Just as tears began to fill my eyes, more officers walked into my room. New ones that I haven't seen before. Five men. Two women.
"Are you ready, Y/N?" one of the men questioned. Then it hit me: police officers don't wear fancy suits. These weren't cops...Silently, I grabbed as much film as I could and shoved all of it in my coat pockets. I stared at them deeply as I tightly held my camera in my dominant hand. "Come on, lets go," one of the women encouraged. My eyes shifted to her. She had her hand hovered over her waist. "Don't make this difficult for yourself."
I looked all around my room. The only other way to escape was the window. "Y/N. Don't even think about it," one man warned. I tilted my head to the side innocently.
"What?" I hummed. "Come with us. We're here to take you to the facility. You'll be taken care of there." I looked down and furrowed my eyebrows, thinking of my dad. Tears blurred my vision and burned my eyes as I snapped my head back up to them. "No!" "I understand. You're upset about your father-"I cut him off, yelling, "You don't understand me! You never will!" Two of them stepped away from their spot in front of my door, coming to my side to comfort me.
I squirmed away from them, bolting out of my bedroom door. Adrenaline filled my chest as I burst out the back door with the "officers" calling my name. Cold air sliced at my skin, but I didn't let that stop me from running as fast as I could. I didn't pay any attention to my surroundings-- my peripheral vison nothing but a blur.My feet crunched against the snow rapidly. I didn't even look behind me to see if they were even chasing after me. I just sprinted as far away as I could, only dodging what was in front of me. My chest burned, but I kept running.
Until I suddenly stopped, realizing that they've probably lost me. I collapsed to the ground, legs now wobbly from all of that. I stared up into the sky as I struggled to catch my breath. "That was awesome," I murmured to myself. A smile twitched onto the corners of my mouth. A giggle erupted from within my chest.
Then suddenly, a bright light shined in my eyes. I flinched and sat up as quickly as possible. As my eyes adjusted, I could make out a shape behind the light. Almost like a ship of some sort, I thought.
A brighter light beamed down onto me, filling my vision and making it unbearable. I tightly shut my eyes, feeling my body being lifted off of the ground. I gripped my camera as hard as I could as I scream-- horrified as so many questions filled my head...What's happening?!
What is this?!
Am I going to die?
Is this real?!
Before I knew it, the light faded.
I opened up my eyes to a crowd surrounding me. All varying of shapes, sizes, and abnormalities that didn't look human at all. "Look what we have here..." one said. His voice was dark and gravelly. He looked human, but not exactly.
He grabbed the fur of my coat and pulled me closer to him. I quickly pulled out my camera and pressed the button. The camera flash seemed to fill the room. Every single one of them tightly shut their eyes and yelled out in pain.Their cries were suddenly silenced by the sight of a blue man yelling, "STOP THAT SCREAMING!" The blue man shoved aside everyone blocking his path until the only thing standing in front of him was me. He kneeled down on the ground to reach my level.
I aimed the camera at him and took a picture, creating another flash. The room became loud of screams again, except for that blue man. He blinked a few times and gently pushed the camera down. "What's your name, girl?" he asked me. I couldn't speak, so I just sat there in silence. "What's your name? I ain't gonna ask you again." "Y/N!" I told him. "Y/N L/N." "And how old are ya?" "Nine..."
"You're comin' with me," he declared and grabbed my forearm. "Hey, Yondu! You opening up a Terran orphanage or something?!" One jeered at him. "Don't you question me," Yondu shouted back. "She's way too young to be sold. And we ain't gonna sell her. She could be useful." What did that mean? I resisted a bit on the blue man's grasp. "I said you're comin' with me, girly. Unless you want these boys to eat you."
The blue man named Yondu took me to another part of the ship and walked into a room with automatically sliding doors. "Quill! Get over here! We got company," he called out. Approaching footsteps was what I feared. I meekly hid behind Yondu. But my fears all went away when I saw who the footsteps belonged to.
A boy. A human boy. How did he get here in a place like this? "See? He's a Terran just like you. He ain't nothin' to be afraid of," Yondu assured me.
"Go on, boy. Introduce yourself. She's gonna be stayin' with us from now on." Yondu told the boy. "Um... Okay," the boy mumbled. "The name's Peter Quill." The boy named Peter put his hand out in front of him. I hesitantly grabbed it and shook his hand. "I'm Y/N L/N."
At that moment, I knew that stars aligned.
