We finally land on Xandar after what seemed like hours of awkward silence. Bereet's hair is fixed in pigtails and Peter is sending her on her way.
He's extra touchy with her, placing both of his hands on her waist. I try not to let it bother me but I can't help feeling horribly jealous as I awkwardly lean on the railing, waiting for them to say goodbye. My eyes lock on the ground below, searching for something to distract myself with. Anything at all. Please, I just don't want to listen to or see Peter being with another person.
My eyes are drawn to a tree-like creature that I've never seen before and a raccoon. The tree is drinking the fountain water while the raccoon seemingly scolds him for doing so. I can't hear them from here but I can at least see them. The raccoon suddenly raises his tablet in Peter and I's direction.I narrow my eyes at the raccoon as I tap Peter on the shoulder. "C'mon." "Alright," he agrees. He turns back to Bereet. "Once again, last night was lovely-" "Let's go!" I urgently whisper to him. He gives me a confused look. "Till we meet again," he smoothly tells the woman. She smiles and walks away from him. He joins my side as I walk in the direction of The Broker.
"What was that all about?" he asks me. I don't give him a response. I'm too busy mentally dealing with the anxiety rolling through my chest. He waits a few seconds before asking me again. "Hey, what's going on? Tell me." "Once we get our units, we need to get out of here as fast as we can," I declare, my voice tense.
"Hey, hey," he says, softly pulling me back to stop me from walking. I turn to face him. "Yondu placed a bounty on the both of us," I gravely say. Peter blinks, slightly taken aback. "I saw someone with a tablet that showed everything about everyone. And I'm pretty sure it detected a bounty because last time I checked, we pissed off Yondu."
"Y/N, look at me." His green eyes stare intensely. "We're gonna be fine. We know how to hide. Bounty or not, we're in this together and we'll help each other." I sigh, "I know, I know. I'm sorry. I knew what we were getting into when we formed that alliance, so I don't know why I'm..." I rub my temples. "It's okay," he tells me. "We'll get our units and go, alright. No lingering."
I nod my head. "I'm sorry for freaking out." "Well, I care about you," he assures, placing a hand on my shoulder. He quickly pulls it away, rubbing the back of his neck. "So how about that drink I promised you earlier?"
My heart flutters in my chest. "Well, how about we get the units to buy that drink first?" "Alright." Peter nods his head.
We approach the metal door and it slides open, allowing us to enter. The Broker is examining an artifact of some sort. He looks up at the both of us. "Mr. Quill and Ms. L/N," he greets. "Broker," Peter chirps and pulls out the Orb from his nap sack. "The Orb," he presents. He places it down on the table with a smile. "As commissioned."
"Where's Yondu?" The Broker questions. "Something came up," I lie. "He wanted to be here. Sends his love. And told me to tell you that you got the best eyebrows in the business," Peter adds. The Broker scoffs, looking up and down at Peter and I. "What exactly is it?" I ask him. "It's my policy never to discuss my clients or their needs," he says. "Yeah, well, we almost died getting it for you," Peter retorts.
"An occupational hazard, I'm sure, in your line of work," The Broker brushes off. "Some machine-headed freak, working for a guy named Ronan," Peter tells The Broker. I give Peter a sharp look. The Broker suddenly stops what he's doing. "Ronan?" he quietly exclaims. Reluctantly, I nod my head in affirmation. The cat's already out of the bag. "I'm sorry, both of you. I truly am." He walks out from his side of the table, grabbing the Orb and placing it firmly in my hand. "But I want no part in this transaction if Ronan is involved." He places either hand on both of us, pushing us out.
