Oh, but the stars didn't align like that in case you were wondering. I meant that in... an eternal friendship sort of way. Partners in crime, you know? After all, we were just kids. Me, nine. Peter, eight. If we had the time for that stuff, we would've gone for it.
Present Day
We land at our destination. Morag. An abandoned planet that holds exactly what we're looking for. "You ready?" Peter looks at me and opens up the hatch. "When am I ever not ready?" I chuckle and press my earpiece, forming my helmet on my face.
"I'm practically your bodyguard. If anything, I should be asking if you're ready," I joke, nudging him with my elbow.I drop down onto the surface of the deserted planet. I pull out my gun in case of trouble, firmly gripping it with my hand. Peter doesn't take this precaution, however. He instead marches ahead of me. We pass geysers and huge rock mounts as the winds gust from every direction. We stop once we see a huge arch made of stone. "That's the place," I affirm to Peter, who pulls out his projector.
After a long scan of the terrain, a hologram of what used to be of this planet spreads out right before our eyes. People. Animals. Happiness. But most of all, it gives us a path to what we were assigned to take.
"There's our booty right there," Peter mutters under his breath. "Why do you have to make it weird?" I roll my eyes and walk ahead of him.
He catches up to me so that he can be in the front. "Watch it," he says. "I'm trying to project where the thing is." "You don't even know what the thing is," I chuckle. "And you do?" Peter retorts. "All we know about this thing is how many units it might get us. And it's an orb.""You're really settled on 1,000 units for an orb? It's definitely much more than that if Yondu wants it so much," I scoff. "How much do you think?" I raise an eyebrow at him even if he can't see my face. "A bet, huh? Fine. I'll bet 10,000." "We'll see once we sell it. Whoever is closest will take all," Peter declares.
"Deal," I smirk, walking into the run-down structure that holds the orb. The both of us click off our helmets. The scent of mildew fills my nostrils. "This place is a wreck," I mutter under my breath. "Do you think we'll-" Before I know it, Peter already has his headphones on. He clicks play on his Walkman and begins to dance.
I can't really hear the music, but I still know exactly what song it is. Come And Get Your Love. I've heard it a million times and I'm still not over it. Probably because all of the songs on Peter's cassette tape remind me of him. I chuckle and let Peter have his moment as I tread in front of him.
About twenty-six years of dealing with this. But goddamn it, I love this. I love seeing him be in his own world listening to the mixtape that his mother made. Even if I'm not exactly listening with him.
"Y/N." He reaches his hand out, inviting me to dance. I let a grin take over my lips and place my hand in his. Immediately, he spins me around and holds me close to him. And, of course, I love being in his world. "Hail, hail!" He sings at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing against the rocky walls. "What's the matter with your head, yeah?" Our bodies sway along with the rhythm as we dance our way across the structure. The both of us jump into a puddle, splashing each other's ankles. Our fingers intertwine just as alien lizards charge toward us, hissing and squealing.
Peter swiftly spins me around and gets in front of me, kicking them away to the beat of the song. "What's the matter with your mind and your sign?"
I spot another climbing on a dead tree. It crawls its way to Peter. Wanting to take a bite, I believe. It lunges toward his neck. I catch its slimy body mid-air. He smirks at me, impressed at my reflexes.
He grabs my wrist and sings into the lizard as if it were a microphone. "Hail!" He points it to me. "Hail!" I sing through laughing. The lizard squirms in my hand, wanting to escape what it probably would describe as "hell".
