I'm pushed into yet another room by a guard. Where am I now? I look around. Two Nova Corps officers stand in front of the screen as it scans me.
"Y/N L/N," one of them says to the other. I raise an eyebrow. Oh, so they're studying me. As if I were some kind of specimen. "Also from Terra and raised by the Ravagers alongside Quill. It says here she has no enhancements other than the translator but I noticed that she heals pretty damn quickly for a Terran."I promptly give him the middle finger and turn away, walking back to the door I was brought into. I violently kick at the bottom of it, trying to get it open.
"What a bunch of a-holes," one of them remarks. "Transport all five to the Kyln."
----
I can't believe this. The moment I betray the Ravagers, I get arrested and locked into one of the most high-security prisons. I wonder what Yondu would think of me. I've failed him even bigger now. Now I'm walking in a line with Peter, the Gamora, a talking raccoon named Rocket, and a tree who I can assume by now his name is Groot.
"I guess most of Nova Corps wanna uphold the laws, but these ones here, they're corrupt and cruel," Rocket rambles. "But, hey, that's not my problem. I ain't gonna be here long. I've escaped 22 prisons. This one's no different."
"Really? How exactly is it no different? Guards basically live here with the prisoners, watching everything they do," I snarkily ask him, peeking above Peter's shoulder so I can see the small creature."All I'm saying is you're lucky the broad showed up because otherwise, me and Groot would be collecting that bounty right now, and you'd be getting drawn and quartered by Yondu and those Ravagers," he boasts. "We've had a lot of folks try to kill us over the years. We're not about to be brought down by a tree and a talking raccoon," Peter says.
"Hold," orders the guard in front of us. We all stop walking.
"What's a raccoon?" questions Rocket. "'What's a raccoon?' It's what you are, stupid," Peter shoots back. "Ain't no thing like me 'cept me." "Except a raccoon," I mutter under my breath. The door opens and the guard continues walking. "So, this Orb has a real shiny blue suitcase, Ark of the Covenant, Maltese Falcon sort of vibe. What is it?" Peter asks Gamora. "I am Groot," Groot says. "So what? What's the Orb?" Peter insists. "And why does Ronan want it so badly?" I add.
"I have no words for honorless thieves," she tells us, bitterly. "Oh, ouch," I say, sarcastically. "You're one to talk, daughter of Thanos.""Yep. Pretty high and mighty coming from the lackey of a genocidal maniac," Rocket points out. Gamora looks back at him, jaw tightened. "Yeah, I know who you are, too. Anyone who's anyone knows who you are."
"Yeah, we know who you are," Peter chimes in. He leans toward me, whispering, "Who is she?" "She was raised by a titan named Thanos, who has a pretty deep history of conquering planets and murdering half of their populations," I explain to him. He slowly nods, looking a bit more threatened.
Her planet was one of them. Zen-Whoberi. And I bet that she was kidnapped by him, too. But I don't say that out loud."I wasn't retrieving the Orb for Ronan," Gamora declares. "I was betraying him. I had an agreement to sell it to a third party." The guard opens another door and leads us through.
"I am Groot." "Well, that's just as fascinating as the first 89 times you told me that," Peter sarcastically beams. "What is wrong with Giving Tree, here?" Rocket begins to tell us exactly what's up. "Well, he don't know talking good like me and you. So his vocabulistics is limited to 'I' and 'am' and 'Groot'. Exclusively in that order."
"I tell you what, that's gonna wear thin, real fast..." Peter trails off, stopping and looking at what's inside the door next to us. I look where he's looking as well. A guard is examining Peter's Walkman. I faintly hear Hooked on a Feeling playing. "Hey!" Peter shouts. "Put that away!" The guard puts on the headphones. "Hey!" Peter slips in the door just as it's closing.
