The next morning Chen Yu tracks down the departments sketch artist and sets him up in an interview room. He hauls in the Officer that was on duty when the waitress was strangled in her cell.
"Uhm, am I getting fired?" The young man asks nervously, taking a seat across from the artist. He watches uncomfortably, as Chen Yu paces.
"No, at least not yet." Chen Yu shoots him a glare. "I need you to describe the 'lawyer' you saw to this sketch artist." He turns to the artist. "Please, take your time. I'll be back in an hour to check on the progress."
"No problem Officer Chen." The middle aged woman smiles warmly at the nervous young Officer across from her and begins asking him questions.
Chen Yu heads back to his desk, but he can't seem to sit still. He paces back and forth behind his chair, chewing on his thumb. He can't believe Wen Peng actually went after Gu Wei at the hospital. He must be feeling pretty desperate. Did he see Chen Yu there, is that why he left in a hurry? If so, he'll be even harder to track down. He heaves a sigh and finally flops back into his chair.
"A'Yu, I know you're worried, I've already put the plain clothes Officer back at A'Wei's side. We'll keep him safe." Wu Zhen Feng promises, he cocks his head to the side, a worried look on his face.
"Thank you ge. I just can't shake the feeling that I won't be able to keep him out of this, no matter how hard I try." Chen Yu bows his head and Wu Zhen Feng swears he see's a year roll down his cheek.
"You're not in this alone didi. You know I'll be there for you and A'Wei, you need only ask." Wu Zhen Feng gives him a sad smile.
"I know, thanks ge. Really, I appreciate it. Have you heard anything from the canvas yet?" Chen Yu asks after the Officers that have begun to canvas all of the high end hotels.
"Nothing yet. Maybe he's not as dumb as we thought?" Wu Zhen Feng asks, then immediately shakes his head. "Bah, he's pretty fucking dumb for going after you on his own."
The phone on Wu Zhen Feng's desk rings and he jumps to answer it. He looks over at Chen Yu and closes his eyes listening.
"Alright, thanks. Have they cleaned the room yet? Damnit! Okay, I'll call off the canvas." He ends the call and quickly places another. After hanging up for the second time, he finally turns to Chen Yu. "He was at the Ritz, can you believe that? He checked out last night, he could be anywhere now."
"Damn!" Chen Yu rakes a frustrated hand through his hair and slumps over. "When the sketch is done I'll take it, as well as Song and Wen's photos to the hospital. Wei will have staff meetings organized and a mass email sent." He sighs heavily. "I hate this. It's like there's nothing for me to do!"
"A'Yu, try to calm down. I know the case feels like it's at a standstill right now, but we both know that's often when a break comes. Hang in there kid." Wu Zhen Feng nods and turns to his phone. "Hello? Yes, he's here. Already? I'll send him back." He hangs up and grins at Chen Yu. "You've got the ringer turned off, don't you? Your sketch is done. Let's go take a look kid."
* * *As soon as Chen Yu and Wu Zhen Feng walk into the interview room, the young Officer leaps up. His eyes are wide and he swallows hard.
"That's him. It's nearly a perfect representation of that fake lawyer. It really looks like him!" The young man is both nervous and excited.
"May I?" Chen Yu asks, reaching out. The sketch is placed in his hand and, as he turns it to look at it properly, his face pales. "Are you sure? It was this man?" He asks the Officer, trying to swallow the bile rising in his throat.
