Not wanting to be bothered she put her stuff away in her locker, keeping her notebook and jacket and walked to the elevator, stepping onto the elevator she pressed the floor number and patiently waited as the elevator went down. The elevator doors opened up to reveal George, her favorite person at the hospital."Dr. Bailey! I thought you went home?" George exclaimed.
"I did, and I'm back. But if anyone asks I'm not here, understand?"
"Yes ma'am" George nodded and the two smiled. The doors opened, George stepped off and the elevator went back up.
Miranda counted the floors as the elevator continued to go up. The elevator stopped and the doors opened. As Miranda stepped off she felt the cool Seattle breeze. While slipping on her jacket she took notice of the figure overlooking Seattle by the edge of the rooftop.
As she walked closer she noticed the figure was looking down, in their lap. Sitting down next to the figure He looked up at her, and she looked over at him.
"Dr. Warren" she said firm but softly as their eyes met.
"Dr. Bailey" he said in the same tone, "what are you doing up here?"
"I usually come up here often, you?"
"Had to get away from those Interns, Residents, and definitely Dr. Baylow who keeps trying to make me get to know her for some reason" the two smiled.
Miranda looked down at his lap, where a book was resting. "Watcha reading?". He flipped the book over to the cover and passed it to her. She read the cover and looked back up into his eyes smiling. "You like poetry?"
"Like?, I love poetry" The two laughed together.
"Same here, What's your favorite poem from the book?" She said handing him the book.
He flipped to a page and read it aloud.
"how many times will I let myself be a second choice before I learn that there are no runner ups in love". "what's your favorite poem?" He asked.
She grabbed her journal and began flipping through the pages until she found the one she was looking for.
"perhaps its just easier to smile and pretend everything is fine, rather than admit my heart's a little swollen from losing something that wasn't even mine."
"Breakup?" He guessed.
"Miscarriage, then lying, cheating, and lastly divorce, very messy." she said looking out into the city. "I had a miscarriage and he blamed me. He would lie about the little things which eventually turned into big things. He cheated on me with Her, She's taller than me, skinnier than me. He got her pregnant while we were still married their child is 1. When we divorced he brought up the fact that I couldn't keep the children I concieved and told me that I was a selfish wife and selfish surgeon." She said letting a single tear slip down her cheek.
He gave her a slight hug, feeling sad and angry for her. Letting go he said "Before I left for the Army I proposed to my girlfriend at the time, she said yes and the plan was to have our wedding after I came back. When I got back I was so happy and excited, I knocked on the door to the apartment we shared, hoping to surprise her. She opened the door pregnant, then a man came up behind her asking her who I was. She gave me my ring back and the rest of my things, but she crushed my soul"
This time it was her turn to give him a hug. She gave him a hug and after letting go they continued to talk.
They talked and talked and talked, about nothing in general but they found each other's voices quite comforting and lovely.
Miranda stifled a yawn as Ben's pager beeped.
"I guess that's our cue" he said laughing. He stood up and helped her up.
"I enjoyed talking to you" she admitted.
He smiled as they walked toward the elevator, getting on he said "I enjoyed talking to you to, who would've known I'd have so much in common with the nazi" he said laughing.
Miranda scrunched up her nose.
Once Miranda left the hospital for the second time, she headed back home and slept comfortably and peacefully for the first time in months.
