Rebecca wiped the sweat off of her forehead before walking back out into the dining room. She dropped off a set of drinks for the family she was serving and went to the next people that had been seated. The setting sun filled the dining room with a beautiful orange glow, making the urge to end her shift early and walk around in the cool breeze aimlessly even more tempting.
"Hey guys, what can I get for you tonight?" Rebecca pulled out her notebook and looked up, feeling a chill run down her spine the second she realized who was seated in front of her.
"Rebecca." The man grinned, "What a surprise."
"Jeff." She grabbed her pen and let out a sigh, "I don't know how much of a surprise it really is, seeing as you already know I work here."
"A pleasure as always." He snarled, "This is my girlfriend, Leighla."
"Nice to meet you, Leighla." Rebecca smiled, thankful she could turn her attention to someone else. "What can I get for you?"
Leighla went to respond but was cut off by Jeff, "Where's your boyfriend now?"
"My boyfriend?" Rebecca furrowed her eyebrows and looked at him, confused.
"Your boyfriend." He repeated, "You two seemed pretty attached at the hip at the bar the other day."
"That's none of your concern." After it clicked in Rebecca's mind, she responded coldly, "Now, what can I get for you guys?"
"His name." Jeff replied with a small smirk.
"I'm not telling you anything about him. It's none of your business." Rebecca sighed, "Now am I going to get your orders or do I need to pass you off to another waitress?"
"No need." He waved his hand dismissively, "I see you haven't lost your dramatic reactions. Is it really the end of the world just because I wanted to know how you've been recently?"
"Better than I was with you, and that's all you need to know." She stared at him with a glare, "I'll give you both another five minutes to think about what you'd like to eat."
She rolled her eyes, shoving her things into her half-apron before Rebecca swiftly maneuvered her way around the busy kitchen. She knew Jeff was controlling and manipulative, which weren't the things that were new to her. It was the fact that she didn't know how far he was willing to go. He'd never shown up to her workplace before, but now that he was bothered by the fact that someone else was potentially in the picture, his jealousy was obvious.
Rebecca pushed open the back doors, stepping outside of the restaurant for a breather. She slipped her phone out of her pocket and looked at the black screen. After taking a deep breath, Rebecca opened her contacts, staring at the number she barely recognized.
She tapped the side of her phone with her finger and clicked on the number before giving herself the chance to back out. The phone continued to ring, and Rebecca wondered if she even had the right number or if he'd remember hers.
"Hello?" She heard his voice and immediately squeezed her eyes shut as past events replayed in her mind.
"Uh, hi. This is Rebecca." She shook her head at herself, cursing her inability to make a conversation flow naturally. "Colby, right?"
"So you did keep my number." His laugh was enough to make chills run through Rebecca's body, in every way opposite to Jeff. "That would be me. What can I do for you?"
"Uh, I know this isn't... convenient..." She sighed, "But, I could kinda use your help again."
He smiled to himself, "Oh, I find it very convenient."
