Rebecca was completely drained after her parent's business party and from constantly being asked about her "new relationship" from absolutely everyone. She wanted nothing more than to go to sleep and forget about everything.

As she went to go get changed, she heard the subtle sound of music playing from downstairs. She knew it had to be Colby due to them being the only people in the house, and she decided to go see what was going on. She walked down the cold hardwood stairs carefully, being mindful of the dress she was still wearing. The closer and closer she got to the kitchen, the louder the music got. She noticed the entire floor was only lit up by one dim light that was placed in the living room.

When she reached the kitchen, she noticed Colby with his back towards her, softly swaying along to the music, while he faced the old radio that sat in the corner. She quietly stood by the door frame, leaning against it, trying to go unnoticed. He was seemingly peaceful, and it looked like it was the first time that night that he was actually enjoying himself.

Colby had heard Rebecca walk down the stairs and make her way to the kitchen. Already knowing that she would be right behind him watching, he quickly turned around meeting Rebecca's stare with a small smile on his face.

"Care to dance?"

Rebecca knew that was probably one of the cheesiest romance movie lines ever, and she couldn't wrap her head around the fact that people, in this case, Colby, actually use it in real life. She stared at him for a moment with an inquisitive look before a large smile overtook her face and she let out a laugh for the first time since they had been put into this predicament together.

He swore he felt his heart stop at that very moment as a strange feeling began to warm his chest and couldn't help but let out a smile that matched hers. Without hesitation, he offered her his hand.

Rebecca knew deep down that the more that she thought about it, the more inclined she would be to refuse. She decided to let her mind rest, slowly walked over to where he was standing and softly took his hand, her cold touch meeting his warmth.

She hesitantly met her eyes to his, and she felt her breath hitch when she noticed him place his hand on her hip. She quickly looked away as they began slowly swaying, a smile still overtaking both of their faces. Rebecca tentatively placed her other hand on his shoulder, feeling the soft silk of his suit slide beneath her fingers, closing some of the remaining distance between them. For the first time in a long time, she felt like she was at peace and laid her head on his chest while she listened to the sound of his heartbeat. They continued to sway and let the music fill their ears and clear their minds. The seconds they spent together began to bleed into minutes and Rebecca finally felt happy.

This is all forced.

With her thoughts once again betraying her, Rebecca began paying attention to their closeness and realized what was going on, hesitation and worry began to consume her, causing her mind to start working overdrive. She felt her nerves and heart rate increase with every passing second. Shock and regret began to wash over her. She quickly lifted her head and tried to release her hand from Colby's, but he only entwined them together and closed the distance once again by resting his cheek on top of her head.

Her eyes shot towards their intertwined fingers and a cold sweat overtook her body. "Colby." Her one simple word almost got lost in the sound of the music, while the sound of her rapid heartbeat flooded her ears barely allowing herself to hear her own voice. She immediately stopped swaying and tried pulling away. "Colby, please."

Begrudgingly, Colby stopped swaying but remained close and left his hand in hers with the other still on her hip. The last thing he wanted to do was let go and have everything go back to square one.

She tried to avoid eye contact and move away, but found herself surrendering to the curiosity that was flowing through her veins and fogging her mind. The constant battle of heart and mind was still prominent and consuming all of Rebecca's thoughts and feelings. She slowly began to remove her eyes from their intertwined fingers and began scanning his face, noticing all of his features, and the smallest details possible, trying to distract herself from the thoughts that were flooding her mind.

While observing, she noticed how his lips were a light pink colour and how they were slightly parted towards the middle. She noticed how he was inhaling and exhaling from his nose instead of his mouth, how his hair and beard had a mix of brown in it instead of just black, and how his cologne left an imprinted smell in her nose. When she finally came out of her thoughts and her mind stopped wandering, she realized that their eyes were locked. She felt the dangerous dark brown colour begin to consume her and her better judgement.

"What's wrong with letting go?"

Tears began to well up in her eyes as his stare and comment made her feel exposed and venerable. She noticed the gaze in his eyes being overtaken by pure curiosity and a hint of something else that she couldn't quite understand. Her eyes still refused to leave his, even as she came to the realization that she had to remove herself from the situation before anything escalated.

The heart and mind are two very different things.

She looked down at the floor as a single tear fell from her eye. Removing her hand from his shoulder, she began to turn around while trying to unravel her fingers from his. Colby remained still and prevented her from being able to let go. Rebecca turned back to look at him so that he would release her hand, but he didn't. His stare remained on her, with his hand never moving. He guided her close to him, lifted her chin and swiftly wiped the tear from her eye with his thumb. His hand rested on her cheek, unmoving. The feeling of his delicate touch on her skin sent chills down Rebecca's spine and caused a wave of adrenaline to flow through her.

As their eyes remained locked, the whole world disappeared from around them. Rebecca felt as if she were paralyzed, and no matter how hard she tried she couldn't leave his gaze. She saw what was coming from a mile away, but couldn't move.

Colby slowly leaned forward, his face just inches away from hers. He looked as if he were waiting for her to protest and step back, but she felt helpless and couldn't find the willpower to move. Colby softly pressed his lips into hers. He untangled his fingers from her hand, gently moving them onto her other cheek, cupping her face. A warm feeling began to overtake both of them until Rebecca pushed away.

When Colby opened his eyes he noticed Rebecca's were filled with tears. He saw a look of pure sadness and heartbreak overtake her face as the tears began to stream.

"You shouldn't have done that."

Her voice cracked as her words came out in a whisper, the hurt and pain in her voice quickly became evident. Colby stood in front of her and was at a loss for words, not knowing what to do or say.

Rebecca turned around and began to run out of the kitchen without any further hesitation. She knew curiosity and hesitation caused this in the first place, and she had no interest in finding out what would happen if she stayed. As she was leaving, Colby went to reach out and grab her hand, but her fingers slipped from his grasp. She was out of his sight when he heard a loud door slam and heard her leave the house.
