Rebecca arrived at the diner early in the morning to help prepare for the breakfast rush. When she reached for the door, she noticed the lights were already on and her friends were inside. The little noise of the overhead bell could be heard as she opened the door and walked in. She wanted to be the first to arrive so she could avoid stares and questions from her friends, but she now realized she wasn't going to be that fortunate.
The diner looked like it was already clean and ready for the customers that would be showing up in around an hour, so Rebecca wanted to take this chance to go to the staff room and rest. While making her way over to the room, her friends noticed her, the slight limp she was trying to hide, and the sunglasses she never removed from her face.
"Becca!" Ashley waved her over to the group that was sitting in a large booth, "Come here!"
Rebecca let out a forced smile and walked over to them slowly, feeling the pain that was beginning to overtake her leg. The group exchanged worried glances when they watched her join them.
"Hey guys," She tried to keep a steady voice while trying to sound like her normal enthusiastic self. She pulled up a chair towards the head of the booth, sitting down slowly, trying to ignore the pain that shot through her leg.
Jon and Joe made eye contact with each other, knowing she was hiding something. While Pamela nudged Mercedes with her elbow, making her look up from her phone confused, as it took her a while to realize what everyone was staring at.
"Hey Becca, what's with the sunglasses?" Mercedes questioned, purely curious.
Pamela squeezed her eyes shut and Colby slightly shook his head, at their friend's forwardness. They all agreed to broach any subject this morning with Rebecca slowly, wanting to avoid her getting defensive and shutting them all out.
"Oh yeah," She let out a small and unconvincing laugh, "The lights are bothering me. I think I had too much alcohol last night."
Jon decided to speak up, "Nice try Becks, but you don't drink that much in one sitting."
"Or by yourself for that matter." Ashley softly continued, "And when I called you last night you were about to go to bed."
Rebecca began growing extremely nervous and uncomfortable, she had planned some excuses but not many, "Well after the phone call, I decided to have some Tequila before sleeping."
"Strike number 3 Becks, you and I finished your stash when you invited us over this past weekend," Jon interjected, waiting for her to explain what was really going on.
"I bought more." She quickly blurted out, trying to sound truthful.
After a few glances and head shakes, she thought they'd finally drop the subject completely and start talking about something else, only to be let down once again.
"Okay, so what's with the limp?" Mercedes once again abruptly approached the topic.
It was Joe's turn to shake his head and slowly slap his forehead, resting his hand there for added effect, hoping Mercedes would catch the hint. Mercedes just sat there unbothered, waiting for an answer, and Pamela stared at her with an annoyed look on her face.
"I, uh, fell." She said while resting her head on top of her folded arms, on the table.
They all stared at her extremely unconvinced, and almost disappointed with the creativity of Rebecca's lies. Sasha had to hold in a laugh and Pamela quickly hit her arm, getting her to be quiet, Joe decided to speak up. "You fell? Out of everything you could have said, you decided to say you fell."
Rebecca just nodded in agreement, not backing down from her poorly made story. She stayed in the same position, resting on the table, trying to ignore the headache she now had.
Pamela decided to take a comforting approach, "Becky, you know we're here for you, you can tell us what's really happening." She reached her hand out, placing it on Rebecca's elbow, in hopes of getting through to her.
"I'm telling the truth, I fell." She burrowed her head further into her arms, hoping in some way it would make this conversation end.
Colby was sitting in the corner, keeping quiet. Not his normal quiet, but uncharacteristically quiet, he continued looking at Rebecca before deciding to continue the conversation. "Rebecca," She rose her head and looked at him, not expecting him to use her full name. Throughout their friendship, she quickly realized the seriousness he held whenever he would use it, "What's really going on?" He softly questioned, catching her off guard when he quickly reached across the table and gently removed the sunglasses from her eyes.
When the glasses were pulled away and her face was finally visible, all of their eyes scanned her, focusing on her blackened, swollen, injured eye. Not a sound could be heard as they stared silently with wide eyes. A mixture of purple and black encased the skin, while the white of her eye was completely bloodshot, and only a small amount could be seen due to her eye being almost swollen shut entirely. Rebecca quickly looked down at the table, tearing up.
Ashley sat with tears in her eyes never looking away from Rebecca, wishing she would just come clean and stop hiding. While Pamela and Mercedes looked towards each other in shock. Pamela stared down at the table, and Mercedes quickly looked out of the window, both of them trying to conceal their upset state. Joe wiped his hand across his face, not knowing what to do or say, and Jon ran his hands through his hair, tapping his foot to try and calm his anger. Colby sat there silently and unmoving, trying to remain calm. He tried to make sure he was hiding his clenching fists and tightened jaw from Rebecca, and he stared at his fists hoping to conceal his rage.
They all knew what the cause of this was, more specifically who. But no matter what happens, no matter the severity, Rebecca never comes clean. They all had questions, they all wanted answers, and just as they were about to begin another round of questioning, the diner's overhead bell rang and a gust of wind entered the diner as the door was quickly pushed open.
"Rebecca?" Her head shot over to the voice, as did the others. She recognized Luke and noticed the urgency and aggression in his voice.
Colby began to stand up, ignoring everyone else as rage began to set in. He caught Rebecca's eyes staring at him, the look of desperation begging for him to sit down. Mercedes put her hand on his shoulder, forcing him down with a shake of her head.
Rebecca quickly stood up and made her way over to the staff room with Luke, knowing he'd want privacy. After a few silent minutes, Colby stood up and ran his hands through his hair as he paced around the room. He grabbed the closest glass to him and threw it across the room, watching it shatter everywhere. He then stormed outside with Joe and Jon quickly following in hopes of getting a hold of him before he did something stupid. Pamela immediately grabbed the broom, cleaning up the mess, distracting herself, while Mercedes consoled a distraught Ashley.
After a few minutes, Colby, Joe, and Jon eventually came back in. They noticed that Pamela was washing her hands, and the other girls were still at the booth talking, while Rebecca was still in the staff room. Joe and Jon made their way over to the booth while Colby went over to Pamela, "Sorry about the mess." His words were quiet and sincere. Pamela nodded in response with a forgiving smile, knowing how stressful the situation was for everyone. She wanted to make sure that they were all able to express their emotions without being shut down or reprimanded.
Before he went to sit back down, Colby heard some arguing coming from the staff room, stopping him in his tracks as he tried to listen. After a few seconds of bickering, there was a loud crash, and everyone went silent. He noticed Luke quickly exit the room and diner without saying a word, and a few seconds later Rebecca slowly walked out. Colby and Pamela quickly noticed the glossed over look in her eyes, "Rebecca, is everything alright?"
Instead of an answer, Colby was just given a blank stare, she reached towards the back of her head and winced when she touched it. When she removed her shaking hand from the painful area, she slowly brought it in front of her. Blood lingered between her fingers, slowly trailing down to her palm, dripping onto the floor.
She looked over at Colby with a scared and panicked look consuming her eyes.
Then it all went dark.
