"What do you mean we're still married?!" Colby's roar filled his office walls, sucking all of the oxygen out of the room.
Pamela tried to hide the jolt of fear she got from his sudden yells, even though she knew she should've been used to them by now. "I mean, you're still married."
"How the fuck is that possible?!" Colby seethed through his teeth while gripping the back of his chair.
She looked down at the documents in her hands and knew it was going to feel like a longer day than usual at this rate. "It seems as though the divorce papers were never finalized."
He ran a hand through his dark curly locks while pacing around the room. "I am engaged to be married in a few months, and you mean to tell me I'm still married to another woman?"
"Yes, that would be correct." She nodded, hoping he'd ask for some form of isolation so she wouldn't have to take the brunt of his frustration anymore.
"Can't we just pay the judge to sign it and be done with it?" He stroked his beard, desperate to find a solution.
"Sir, these papers are from almost twenty years ago." Pamela shook her head, "You need a new set of updated information, along with your wife's signature."
"She's not my wife." He stated strongly, "That's long gone."
Pamela tilted her head from side to side, "Well, technically..."
"Fix it." Colby crossed his arms and turned towards his window. "Bribe someone, falsify the documents, figure something out."
Pamela sighed, "The only way you can settle the agreement and still get married on your current timeline is the proper way."
She watched the array of emotions play upon his face. "It's also the cleanest way. Then you can avoid the press getting a hold of dirt on you. If you do it secretively enough, it'll all work out simpler than you're making it sound."
He chose to ignore the picture hidden behind a statue on one of his shelves, of them as teenagers. "I'm not interested in dealing with her ever again."
"Was she really that horrible?" Pamela questioned, "You make it sound like a nightmare."
"No, it's not that." Pamela saw his face soften in the slightest. "She was quite the opposite actually..."
He shook his head, almost as if he was shaking away his gentler thoughts. "But either way, she's the last person I want to deal with before I get married."
Confusion infiltrated her brows, "Why would that be then?"
"Just-" He found himself struggling to think of excuses, "Because..."
"This really can be a quick and simple fix." Pamela got tired of the circle they were going in. "Why don't we just call her now and see if she's available to fly over?"
"What?!" Colby spun toward her so quickly that he almost toppled over. "No."
"Why not?" Pamela let out a huff, placing the paperwork on his desk.
Colby rolled his eyes, "What part of I don't want to deal with her, don't you understand?"
"Seeing as you intend to get married and want to fix the problem because you're already married... all of it." She sat down in the seat across from his, spreading out the array of paper. "How do you intend to solve this whole ordeal without your wife, who legally has to do it with you?"
"I don't know!" His frustration barely subsided, and he wanted to punch the wall next to him.
Pamela just rolled her eyes and faced the phone on the desk toward her, dragging her finger across a page while dialling a number. When Colby turned around, his hands went cold. "What are you doing?!"
"Calling her." Pamela answered easily, pressing the speaker button.
He thought it was some sort of sick joke until he heard it actually ringing through. "No!"
He lurched to hang up the phone until it stopped ringing, and he froze at the voice he last heard ages ago. "Hello?"
Pamela smiled at a stunned Colby while she spoke, "Hi, is this Rebecca Lopez?"
They heard a quiet laugh on the other end before the woman responded. "No, actually, those days are long gone. It's Rebecca Quin."
"About that..." Pamela started, ignoring Colby's constant aggressive head shaking. "It's actually Lopez."
"What?" Rebecca's laugh was louder this time, and when she didn't hear anything else on the other end, she sobered up, confused. "I'm sorry... do I know who this is?"
"Not me, no. But you do know my boss." Pamela didn't know much about their relationship, but she did know she enjoyed seeing Colby in a state of duress for once, instead of his employees. "My name is Pamela Martinez, and I work for your husband."
"Husband?" Rebecca felt her stomach drop as she shook her head. "What are you on about?"
Pamela realized she felt worse from the woman she knew nothing about rather than the man she'd known for years. "Well, it is to my understanding that there has been an issue with your... divorce from Mr. Lopez."
"What?" Her tone was a mixture of disbelief and something Pamela nor Colby could read.
"They were never finalized and approved by a judge." There really was no way of breaking the news properly, but Pamela still tried to be as gentle with her as possible.
Rebecca's laugh almost shook the phone, "And I'm just supposed to trust some random lady telling me all of this over the phone?"
"Well, I've just sent you a copy of your marriage license and half-filled-out divorce papers." Colby watched Pamela type something up on the laptop he hadn't noticed sitting in front of her. "Along with some more of your and Mr. Lopez's personal information to prove this is indeed real."
The line went silent, and Colby almost prayed it was because she really did think it was a scam and decided to just hang up. But then he heard some clicking and rummaging around, and he knew she had seen the emails.
"For the past twenty-some-odd years, I've been married?" Rebecca asked softly before her voice raised ever so slightly after some prolonged silence. "Is that what you're telling me?"
"Yes." Pamela replied, "Since the marriage papers were signed, you and Colby have been Mr. and Mrs. Lopez."
There was a very long pause on the other side of the line. "Is... he with you?"
Pamela looked over to Colby, who just shook his head no once. His face held a pale undertone, and Rebecca spoke up once again. "Is Colby... there?"
"Yes." Pamela softly answered, feeling the tension grow more than she thought possible. "Yes, Colby is here."
"Hey, Rebecca." He physically cringed at the delay in his words before saying her name and hearing her name leave his lips for the first time in years.
Now he really thought she was going to hang up with the rate of the silence after his pathetic greeting. "Hello, Colby."
Hearing her say his name again brought up a heavy feeling in his chest he didn't want to admit to entertaining. Luckily Pamela took the initiative after seeing the look in Colby's eyes.
"Mrs. Lopez, what are your plans this weekend?" She straightened out some papers in front of her, "I think I can make a quick arrangement to get all of this sorted."
Rebecca sighed, and Colby wondered if she still looked the same when she rolled her eyes. "Just mail the paperwork to me, and I'll sign it and get it back to you."
"Actually, you and Mr. Lopez would have to plead your case to a judge together." Pamela explained, "Which would mean you both have to be in the same place at once."
Colby's eyes widened, hearing Pamela explain what would need to be done. "But once we send a plane for you and get it all sorted out, you and Mr. Lopez can go back about your lives as if nothing has changed."
Colby and Pamela made eye contact, and he shook his head, mouthing silently to her. "You're fired."
Pamela silenced her tiny chuckle, and there was a stillness on Rebecca's end as she tapped her foot rapidly. Just when they thought there'd be no way she would willingly go along with the plan, Rebecca spoke up. "How quickly can you get that jet over here?"
