HARLEY
I looked ahead at the wads of glittery snow that blanketed the hospital courtyard in its layers. Nina's hand rested atop mine, and it was just as cold as the winter outside the window. It made me purse my lips to forestall another fit of crying.
I found myself unable to move, even though sitting on this chair felt like a waste of time. My heart was breaking. I couldn't imagine my life without this precious girl, and she'd just tried talking about my future, which soon would be bereft of her presence. It was a dagger in my heart.
I had to do it. I had to make the most of her final days. The Lullaby Nights were the answer, the right solution. I wanted to see that beautiful smile reach her eyes again. I wanted Nina to feel happy, loved, and aware that she wouldn't be alone when the time comes. She deserved the world. It was the world that didn't deserve her. Perhaps that was why she had to—
I felt the grip of Nina's hand tighten around my own. I turned my attention to her.
'What are you thinking about?' Her voice sounded thick and weary.
My heart clenched. I willed myself to smile.
'Have some rest, my love.' I got off the chair and kissed her forehead. 'And when you wake up, I promise it'll be the most beautiful days you've ever lived.'
I'd never meant anything more than the promise I'd just made to her.
