As the sun falls over the villa, an orange hue coats the outside furniture battling the green light from the pool. Zwena sits on a pillow laid down on the floor between Shai's long legs. Playing around with the now empty spray bottle, Zwena waits for Shai to finish wrapping her long cornrows in a blue silk scarf. They'd come back from a long day at the beach and had just taken turns washing each other's hair. As a one time opportunity, and a result of Zwena's begging, Shai gave her the chance to style his hair.
"Aight, is that okay?" Shai questions looking over Zwena's head, inspecting the knots he made sure weren't too tight.
"Yeah, now sit down! Let me do yours." Zwena impatiently stands pulling Shai from the spot he once occupied on the outdoor couch.
"I'm going to regret this, aren't I?" Shai sinks down onto the pillow his hand lightly grazing Zwena's exposed knee, an act that instantly sends all of Zwena's body heat to her knees.
Zwena's Confessional:
“How would I define myself and Shai?” Zwena thinks out loud before letting out a strained sigh. “I don't know. I just got out of a... somewhat serious relationship and I don't want to define something I'm not even sure is there. As for now, we're just friends.”"How's that?" Zwena asks handing Shai the mirror to examine the one lose braid hanging in front of his left eye.
"Ena, you're good at a lot of things. But please don't try braiding professionally..." Shai jests tilting his head back, grinning, to look at Zwena's scowl.
"I really dislike you. A lot." Zwena retorts undoing the braid opting for cornrows she somehow knew how to do better.
A moment of silence falls over the two briefly before Shai's voice is heard, "So uh, how're you feeling now?"
"Man, I barely know what to tell myself. I go to bed telling myself I made the right decision and that the next day I'll spare no space in my mind nor heart for him. Then the next morning... The next morning I'm beating myself up over things I have zero control over and he's the main character in my life again. Shai, I want to be over him so bad and just move on but even over four thousand miles away, everything reminds me of him. I'm exhausted."
"Nothing I can say will make it better, I understand that. But I went through the same thing with Hailey last year and you helped he through that. You feeling tired just means you realize the strain he had on you and you're setting out to get rid of that. It takes time, but you just have to trust the process." Shai finishes with a playful jab to get to Zwena's seemingly impossible smile.
"Oh you're evil evil! I should've thrown your ass off that boat today." Smiling, Zwena lightly flicks Shai's earlobe. "But you're right. Thank you."
