From childhood I had never believed in permanence, and yet I had longed for it.THE QUIET AMERICAN / GRAHAM GREENE
RHIANNON SI EXPECTED TO DIE IN DISTRICT 12. Not in any particularly unique manner, but she presumed that she would see a similar demise as her neighbors. Maybe the frequent smoke inhalation from the mines would eventually render her lungs useless. Perhaps starvation would be the ultimate culprit as it usually was in 12. Regardless of the how, Rhiannon was fairly certain of the where.
Fate, it seems, had other plans in mind.
Cue the fiftieth Hunger Games, the forsaken second Quarter Quell. Double the tributes, double the odds. While Rhiannon was spared from the (un)luck of the draw, the same could not be said for Haymitch Abernathy. Watching a loved one in the Games is arguably as worse as being a contender yourself. Rhiannon's eyes were permanently glued to a screen - in her home, at school, or in the square while walking from one to another. For the first time in her life, she joined in on her grandmother's devotional meditations to an entity her ancestors worshiped well before Panem's genesis.
By the grace of some unworldly presence - Haymitch returned. Only, his victory-securing move had cost him more than his remaining innocence. After the events that preceded the Dark Days, the Capitol cannot afford to display any sign of weakness. Using their own forcefield against themselves...that could very well be considered to be a prime example. Fate had come to Rhiannon's aid once again, sending a friendly face to warn and redirect her from the Seam where Peacekeepers were ransacking the place, looking for three citizens - her name comprising one-third of the list.
Once again, Rhiannon escaped the Grim Reaper by fleeing into the unknown. Perhaps, in her new district, she would be able to lie low and avoid her demise until she lived a long, fulfilling life.
Unfortunately for her, those of District 2 have a tendency to challenge Death itself.
