This Is Home - Switchfoot

After our explanations, Mother stares at us in what I can only guess to be shock and a bit of disbelief. I understand if she thinks that we are lying, as it was something even I had doubts about though I lived through it. Obi and I stay silent as she processes it all, waiting for any questions she may have.

"Why did he take you, do you know?" She asks finally.

I shake my head and sigh. "From what little I remember, he simply kept me with him sort of like property. I kept up the house and cooking and that was basically it. He'd tell me he loved me and that I belonged to him but I don't really remember much else. He freaked out if I tried to leave, most of the time I wasn't even allowed outside of the cottage. He'd hurt me if I disobeyed or tried to run. He apparently broke my ankle the first time Len and I met again but I didn't see him again until after it had healed and I snuck out again. Len told me that Threil had broken my ankle for trying to run but Threil said I'd simply tripped over something. When I got back and Threil knew I had disobeyed him, he said that he'd break both ankles next time so I couldn't leave, and it was enough for me to start to trust that Len actually did know me and it gave me the strength to fight and leave. I accidentally killed Threil in the struggle..."

Mother stays quiet again before getting to her feet and moving around the table to where Obi is sitting. This probably won't end well.

"Len, please stand."

"Yes Ma'am."

Obi places his cup on the table and gets to his feet but I can tell by the tension in his body, he's just as ready as I am for him to be struck. My eyes widen as Mother hugs him, though her head only stops at the center of his chest and he looks unsettled by the action.

"Thank you for loving and protecting my daughter and bringing her home."

"I told you ever since I was a child that I'd do anything for your daughter whether you approved of me or not. I may not be worth much but I love her with all of my heart and I'm not going to let her in harm's way again."

"I'm sorry I never approved of you, I just didn't want to accept that I may lose my daughter to some boy at such a young age, I wanted her to be my baby for as long as I could have her." Mother tells him as she pulls away and returns to the table.

"I was always your baby, Mother. You know that." I cut in. "Len and I simply married that night because we heard you talking with Father about sending me away to prepare to have me married off into nobility."

"Your father and I had discussed it, yes, but then we'd gotten a letter from your grandparents in Tanbarun and they needed help for the harvest months because your grandfather had fallen from a horse. We were going to take you there to help them out and hopefully work through some of your rebellious and restless energy but before we could talk to you about it, you both were gone. Len's mother had even talked about sending him along as well for the same reasons. Sadly, we knew that even if we had taken you to the schooling, you would've found a way to get kicked out so you could come back to Len. I think in a way us parents knew there'd be no way to keep you two apart. It was too obvious how much you both cared for each other."

I look over at Obi to find him smiling softly at me, the love in his eyes not hidden in the slightest. I smile back and lay my hand on top of his.

"I think Len would have invaded the school faster than I could've gotten kicked out." I chuckle. "I'm sorry we ran off and married without your blessing, Mother, but we knew that was what we wanted to do and it seemed like the only way I could stay."

"I really can't blame you," She sighs. "My parents disapproved of me marrying your father so we eloped and less than a year later, we had you." Her eyes widen as she focuses on me again. "I- uh, Elydia- about your father..."

"I know," I cut in quietly. "Len told me."

"I would come through every so often to check in on you and on my mother and sister. One of my last stops in was right after the accident." Obi explains. "I've lost Anyala and I know Mother is gone to feed her addictions. I'm sorry for your loss, Ms. Morrell."

"I'm sorry for your family as well. I tried for so long to help Marietta but she didn't want to accept the help. I was going to take Anyala in but she disappeared before I could."

"Mother, can I meet- uh, does Theomas know about me?"

"I told him all about you and different stories about you as he grew up. I couldn't tell him what happened to you, so he thinks you've just been gone away on a long trip. He's been so excited to meet you, he goes through spells of asking me daily for a month if you're coming back yet, but I'd lie and say it would be just a little longer. You can meet him if you'd like." Mother calls Theomas into the kitchen with us and seeing him again brings tears to my eyes though I don't know him at all. He wanted to meet his big sister even though he only knew of her through Mother's stories. Between that and looking like Father, it's making me want to cry already.

"Theomas, I want you to meet someone. This is your big sister Elydia, she's back from her trip finally, and this is her husband Len."

His eyes widen as he looks up at me. "Ellie's home!"

Before I can blink Theomas jumps onto my lap and hugs me so tightly I feel like I'm going to suffocate but I hug him back all the same as he starts to cry.

"Why were you gone so long Ellie? Momma said you were doing something important but I wanted to see you. Were you fighting bad guys? Are you a princess?"

He breaks his hold enough for me to breathe and I ruffle his hair.

"I'm definitely not a princess but I tried my hardest to get back home as soon as I could it just took a bit longer than I thought."

"Are you staying here with us now?"

"I won't be living here with you, I'll be staying with my husband, but I definitely will come over a lot to spend time with you and Mother, alright?"

"Every day?"

"Maybe not every day, since you probably have schooling, but at least once a week for sure, how about that?"

"Will you stay over that day?" He pouts up at me and I can't help but grin and cave.

"I think I can do that."
