Naruto and Sonata were laughing at they departed from the group. She had beat Kiba in the race as expected. She did train on the moon after all.
Naruto had his hands behind his head as he usually do when he's comfortable. "The look on his face was priceless. Someone as cocky as him needs to be beat often."
Sonata placed her hand behind her back as she looked straight. They were headed home so they decided to walk together since it's the same area. "You know you're just as cocky." She stated, still looking straight ahead.
Naruto's face morphed into disgust as he thought of him being anything like Kiba. "I'm nothing like that guy. He's a terrible person."
"You two used to be close friends." Sonata reminded him. "It's been 4 years." She softly added.
She looked over at Naruto when she realize he stopped walking, anger setting in on his face. "What are you saying? To let it go and become back friends with that backstabbing dog? Of course you would say that. You've always had a soft spot for him. Are you sure you're not in love with him?" He was feeling the anger just as fresh as the day it happened.
She frowned, telling herself not to get angry. "I'm saying it is best to let that go. Kiba was stupid for kissing me and I know he tried to apologize to you more times than he can count because he told me. He regret messing things up. He still does." She looked straight into Naruto's angry blue eyes. "If I loved Kiba, I would be with him right now. Kiba was there for me when even you weren't. Even then, I'm still not in love with Kiba."
Naruto let out a deep breath, his eyes stayed on Sonata. She was looking at him with a different kind of sadness that it hurt his chest to see it. He wanted to reach out and pull her to him. He didn't deserve her anymore. He could pretend like he was angry at Kiba but he was angry at himself. "You're absolutely right." He rubbed his eyes, letting out a fake yawn. "I'm getting tired. Let's just get to our homes." He started to walk again.
Sonata followed behind him, still feeling frustrated. She stayed quiet as they walked home. When she got to her door, she turned to face Naruto once more. "You know, I missed you a lot while I was away. If I knew that things were going to be this bad between us. I should've stayed there." She frowned. She quietly entered her place and let herself collapse on her couch. Since when did talking to Naruto make her so exhausted. She hated this.
*** 2 weeks later
It was like a unspoken message between Naruto and Sonata. They spoke to each other but they never had conversation. It was becoming obvious to Sonata that Naruto didn't want to be friends like they were before and he wanted to keep his distance. It hurt her but she was trying to deal with it.
Tonight she was having drinks with the usual group, including Naruto. It looked like he had someone accompanying him. She took a sip of her drink and made a face. "This is the last time I let you choose my drink, Sakura." She glared at her. Sakura stuck her tongue out at her. "Well Sasuke likes it."
Sonata glanced at Sasuke who was sipping his drink and listening to Naruto talk about who knows what. He didn't flinch not once at the sips. "He's a different breed." She shuddered.
She smiled as Tamaki and Kiba walked in. Tamaki was still keeping her distance from Kiba but they were friends, nevertheless. It was fun watching Kiba follow her around like a lovesick puppy.
Kiba plopped down next to Sonata, eyeing her drink. "Sakura got you that, didn't she?" He, too, shuddered. "Remember when she made us try it out, Tamaki?"
Tamaki grimaced at the memory. "I don't want to remember it."
"So, I'm just another victim." Sonata sighed.
Sasuke reached out towards Sonata. "I'll drink it, if you want." She happily handed him her glass. "It's all yours."
Naruto had just returned from the bar with two drinks in his hand. He silently handed Sonata one. "Try this one out." He placed the drink in front of her. "I bet you'll like it much better than Sakura's drink. Teme is the only one that can handle it."
Sonata took the drink a little surprise then the surprise left her face when she saw him hand the woman he was with the other drink. She took the drink, nonetheless. She took a small sip and her eyes widened at the taste. "Oh, this is pretty good."
Naruto grinned, proudly. "This is Choi's favorite drink. I thought you would prefer it."
"I'm glad you like it." The woman with Naruto spoke up. "I don't think you were here when Naruto introduced me to everyone before. I'm Choi. I think we met before when I was leaving Naruto's place. I was in a hurry at the time."
Sonata knew that she looked familiar. Suddenly the drink she was drinking didn't taste that good anymore. She forced a smile and said, "I'm Sonata. Nice to meet you."
Kiba elbowed Sonata catching her attention, "Hey, you remember this song." He excitedly pointed towards the speaker that was playing a song that she haven't hard in a long time. "You were helping me nurse back Akamaru and then this song came on. Remember Akamaru was trying to dance when he heard it even though he didn't feel well. You and I both started to dance to cheer him on and make him feel better."
"Come on! let's honor that memory by dancing to it." Sonata grinned, pushing Kiba out the booth.
Tamaki smiled as she watch those two dance. Seeing Kiba happy always made her happy. Her attention was caught by Choi, Naruto's friend. "Yes?" She answered.
Choi tilted her head to the side towards Sonata and Kiba. "Doesn't it bother you that they are that close?" She asked, curiously.
Tamaki looked back at the two, who were now jabbing each other. "Not really. It never did. Kiba told me about his feelings for Sonata before him and I started dating awhile back. I'm not worried about them being close. I love that they are close. I just hate that I'm not enough." Tamaki looked over at Naruto, who was staring at Sonata with a faraway look in his eyes. "Tell me Naruto, why did you have to break up with Sonata?"
That got Naruto's attention. He blinked away from Sonata's direction. "Because I was stupid." He shrugged, accepting his stupidity. "You know Kiba doesn't love Sonata anymore, right?"
Choi looked up at Naruto, wondering how he knew. "You say that, why?"
"He's not acting like how he used to when he did love her. He used to also have this look in his eyes when he would talk to her. I know because I paid attention. I didn't hate Kiba for loving her, I can see why he did. I knew he was there for her when she needed someone the most." Naruto shook his head, shaking away the image of Sonata after Pain's attack. "And she was there for him when he needed someone the most. Back then, the look in his eye was bright. Like I said, that look is gone. Tamaki, he follows you around like a lost puppy with a even brighter look in his eyes. I hope you don't make that mutt wait for too long."
Choi snickered, "Shouldn't you follow your own advice,"
Sakura stood up, done eavesdropping on their conversation. "Naruto's a coward. Trust me on this. Come on Sasuke, let's dance. Sonata and Kiba are having all the fun."
Choi grabbed Tamaki's hand and pulled her towards the dance floor. "We'll leave the coward to think on his own."
Tamaki eyed Naruto as they moved farther from the table. She didn't think he was a coward at all but she wish that he could forgive himself.
