Aaron's pov
I lost the coin flip and had to be the designated driver for Justin later tonight so I couldn't exactly get wasted. Which was kind of the whole point of the party, so I decided to go upstairs and find someplace quieter to wait it out.
I walked past one of the rooms on the upper level and heard a faint voice, "fuck you, Lily, fuck you." I silently walked closer towards the voice until I saw her. It was the girl from this morning.
She had started to sob as she looked up at the sky and continued to curse at the air, "you were so fucking stupid, how could you leave me here with them." She cried out. I wasn't sure if I should approach her but she definitely didn't look okay and it worried me that she was so close to the edge of the balcony.
Her sobs quieted after a minute or two and I decided to walked slowly out passed the door separating us. I stood next to her with my elbows on the railing and looked straight at the sky where she was staring.
She knew I was there but she didn't say anything just continued to silently cry and look straight forward.
I decided to break the silence without looking at her, "Do you want to talk about it?" She took a while to answer and took a death breath, "I don't know." I looked down at her and she quickly pulled her sleeves down to cover her bracelets she didn't want me to see. I thought it was odd but didn't think much of it.
"Ok, well can I ask you a question?" I was now facing her but she still stared unblinking at an invisible point in the sky. "You just did." She said and I chuckled a bit when she gave a smile so small I almost missed it. The smile faded and she said "I guess," I continued to look at her, "who's Lily?"
Again, our surroundings fell silent, but this time she looked down at her hand that was fisted so tight her knuckles were white. "She was my sister," the girl said. Against my better judgement, I let my curiosity take over and asked "Was?"
"Yea...she decided that leaving me broken and bleeding in a car for 6 hours while she took a vacation to go see god was a good idea." She took another sip of the beer she was holding and grimaced. I'm still in shock of what she just said, her sister was dead? she was in that car for 6 hours? And what did she mean by broken?
As I'm looking at her I never realized the freckles on her face, her sunken eyes tell me she hasn't slept well in a while, she looks miserable. But she was beautiful still. I honestly didn't know what to say so I said the only thing I could think of, "I'm sorry."
She finally looked at me, "What the hell are you sorry for?" I looked down at her and she couldn't keep eye contact, "for the shitty cards god dealt you." She glanced at my eyes and I saw tears form in her red-rimmed eyes.
Thea's pov
I can't look at him, don't get me wrong he's gorgeous but his eyes, they're so much like hers I can't. I saw him look at my fist again and I relaxed it feeling the blood I drew from how hard I was squeezing. "I don't like looking at you," I said. I don't even know why I said it but hey, I probably wouldn't remember it tomorrow so who cares. I glanced at his confused expression and decided to elaborate, "your eyes look just like hers," I continued. He apologized again, "Sorry."
I looked at him for a few seconds, "Would you stop apologizing please, it's annoying."
"Sorr- ok...do you want to be left alone up here?" He asked. Oddly enough, his company kept my mind at ease, which was a little scary because I haven't felt peace in another person's presence in a long time. I reluctantly grabbed his sleeve as he was walking back and lightly pulled him to stay. For some unknown reason he seems different to me, like I could finally open up to someone."Well then, because you want me to stay so bad, can I at least get your name?" I rolled my tear stained eyes and held the hand without blood on it out for him, "Athena Cadman, but you can call me T-Thea." I heard myself start to slur my words and knew it was time to call it a night but my parents would only attack me more if I came home like this.
He shook my hand and said, "Aaron Hastings." I feel like I've heard his name before, he's probably one of the more popular kids at McAdam's. Maybe he can give me a ride home. "Heyyy, are you by any chance sober?" I looked at him with pleading eyes.
"Yea I am, why? you need a ride?" How do I explain this without dumping all my shit on him. "Um it's a little complicated but I can't go home l-like this-" I started giggling for no reason at all "-but I have money for a hotel could you drop me off there?" I saw it in his confused look what he was going to say next.
"Nonsense you can stay at my house for the night, I would feel less worried about you if you weren't intoxicated, alone, at a hotel." I contemplated it for all of two seconds, "No thanks, just a ride would be good."
Aaron's pov
She was avoiding eye contact for dear life, and I couldn't figure out why. It wasn't that my eyes looked like her sister, Lily's, there was something she was hiding, another reason she wanted to be alone tonight. "Please I really wouldn't forgive myself if I left you there." I begged and pleaded and she finally said yes but she didn't move, I think she wanted to stay up her a bit longer.
We stood in comfortable silence beside eachother when I finally asked, "Are you okay, Thea?" She turned her so her back was touching the railing and threw her head back over it, looking up at the sky. "Ask me another day, Aaron."
