Chapter 12

'Ready everyone?' Mr Bryce's deep voice echoed.

'Yes!' We cried in unison, waving our weapons in the air, me revving the engine of the roller bike. Our spirits were high and strong, ready to fight for our freedom, our lives, our families. If we stayed silent, sooner or later, only more Seizers would come. We were not meant to be enslaved or anything of the sort, so we fight.

'Then onwards!'

Streaks of hundreds of colours zoomed onto the bridge that connected Cilenio island and the mainland. Looking back for a split second, only a few stayed back. The younger ones and the elders that were too frail to even get out of their beds.

I could feel a sense of dread in the pit of my stomach. I was actually going back there. After I had escaped with much difficulty. It was like a phobia thingy. But the thought of Vendellynne kept me going. As well as Nolene. I just have to imagine. Fight for my mother, for my sister, my friends and everyone else that did no wrong to deserve any of this.

I knew it would take roughly two days to get to Galencia, and god was on our side. The weather was clear and crisp. Occasionally, we stopped for breaks but nothing much happened.

Night fell upon us quicker than we had all expected. We made camp at Gouche, the halfway point of Cilenio and Galencia. Everything seemed in order.

'Oi, Willy.' I called out to a young little boy from across the small lake in a hushed voice. Some people were already asleep. Willy, he was eight years old and had straggly dirty blond hair, crept to my side, clutching a bottle of water he too had just collected. 'What are you doing here?!' My voice raised with alarm. 'Don't you know you're not suppose to be here? It's too dangerous for a little boy like you. Where's your mummy and daddy Willy?'

'I'm not a little boy anymore.' Willy said with an air of haughtiness. 'My mummy and daddy are dead but my little sister's not! So I'm going to save her. No one's going to stop me. Don't worry about me. I'm not scared. Are you?'

I was slightly taken aback by his sudden question. 'A little. It's good that you're not. You're a brave big boy then.' He smiled smugly in an I-told-you-so way. 'How've you been getting by?'

'People's cars. I sit at the very back. It's called tagging along. They didn't even notice I was there.' Willy said proudly, his cheeky blue eyes twinkling.

'Tell you what, you can "tag along" in my bike. I have a seat to spare. And stay close to me. I want to keep you in my sight, you sneaky boy.' Giving his nose a little pinch, my mouth twitched into a smile. That hadn't happen for quite a while.

Willy broke into a grin. 'Cool! Do I get to drive it?'

'N- sssh.' Placing a finger onto his lips, I tried to listen attentively. 'Do you hear that?' I thought I heard faint noises emitted from engines a distance away. But everyone was here...so it couldn't be any of us...unless...but...they've got to us?

'No I don't hear any...hey wait. I hear them too!' Willy's electric blue eyes lit up. 'But we've gotta run then! C'mon! We need to warn the others!' He grabbed my hand and started tugging hard.

I didn't need any persuasion. I jumped to my feet and quickly stuffed my supplies into my bag and threw it over my shoulder. 'Everyone! Be alert! Stay on guard! Someone's coming.' Everybody gathered themselves, some peeking out of their mobile homes, rubbing their eyes, no doubt they were asleep then. 'Ready your weapons, please.'

The next thing that happened took everyone by surprise. Hundreds of cars approached, they were not in uniforms so they would not have been the Seizers or troops. We made a path for them to ride on but they stop, just before our camp. Something caught my eye. A neon-coloured circle with three pairs of arms linked together, surrounding two daggers arranged into a cross, was pasted on each and every one of the new uninvited cars. The Ryllsean crest. I wasn't the only one to spot that, the tension started to build and our almost friendly faces turned pretty hostile. Narrowed eyes, curled lips, snarls and jeers, it seemed like a war was about to start before we could actually get to the actual one.

A scrawny surly man got out from his car. 'Cilenions.' He scoffed and came forward to us. 'Listen up you begga-'

'Beggars?!' I didn't bother to restrain myself. I don't know. I just felt bold and daring. 'How dare you?! You! You-you Ryllseans! You and your people are selfish and it seems that you guys will always be! We may not have the money and much resources, but at least we are better than you! Are you the head chief, Mr Beanpole?'

'Preposterous! I am Myrious. And I order you and the other Cilenions to scram! We have picked this spot to camp. Now move on or die!' He cocked his gun.

'Look here mister! We got here first, and we are not leaving.' I took big strides to Myrius. He wasn't exactly tall so we were on the same eye level. 'Whatever your business is, our's is more important. We're at war with Galencia, you don't wanna be involved now do ya? Find another spot.' I said between gritted teeth.

'I'm afraid that won't do.' He let off a low chuckle that sound mildly malicious. 'You see, we're at war with them too. They took our people, our children...my daughter...' Sadness flushed in his face for a second but he straightened up.

'I'm sorry about you daughter...' Feeling sorry for him all of a sudden, I nearly forgotten that we were enemies. 'They took our people as well, so we're on the same side then.'

'Tough luck, though. We have a bigger army. You will definitely lose. I am now giving you a chance to back off, or we will fight.'

'Wait!' I called to him before Myrius could get back to his car. 'You can't win Galencia. Not on your own. You will need my help, all of us actually. We can work together this once. We have the same objective right? Getting back our families? We're not backing down from anything, and if we fight, you are already losing men. What's more important? A feud that started half a century ago? Or saving our people? We're not the enemies here, Galencians are the real ones.' I wasn't sure if Myrius would take up the offer and compromise and cooperate. If he doesn't, he was right and they will win over us. 'What do you say, Myrius?' I held up my hand.

He stared hard at my gesture. 'I don't know what you're playing at girl.' He snarled. My heart fell. He wouldn't listen and he wouldn't care... 'But...I will take the risk...' He spoke very slowly as if it were something hard to say. He extended his own bony hands to greet mine and it was a quick handshake. 'No funny business here, or we strike.' He whispered lowly, making it impossible for anyone but the two of us to hear.

'Don't worry.' I tried to resist a smile. 'Alright Cilenions!' I shouted, my voice echoing into the night. 'Move move move. Make space for the...um...Ryllseans to camp!' People grumbled as they moved aside their vehicles. 'Oi!' I yelled at a Ryllsean lady whom cornered Willy. 'You wouldn't hit a little boy! Hey! Willy Dirksin! How dare you hit a lady!'
