Chapter 20
Harry went rigid. 'You're lying.' He said, but his voice wavered.
'But you know I'm not. It says it right there, in the uncertainty of your voice.' Huttens was now speaking with mad enthusiasm. 'Why? Too scared to know the truth? The truth hurts sometimes, and you'll just have to accept it.'
Harry slowly turned to me, his green eyes were glossy. 'Azelynne?' I could read it from his eyes, he was asking for the truth.
'Harry, I-I-' Words failed me as I stammered. 'I had no choice Harry. They have my sister. Harry, I-' I steadied my voice as he turned to look away. 'Please look at me, Harry. All I wanted was my sister.' I took his hands in mine but he flinched and snatched them away. 'I'm telling the truth, Harry. My intentions were just to get back my sister. He's having her-' My voice cracked slightly.
'She's a really good actress, wasn't she, eh Harry?' Huttens gloated. I wished he would just shut up and go away. 'Love. Bah! It doesn't really exist. The sooner you accept it the better. Women, they can tempt you, but that's all they'll do to get what they what. The relationship never existed. But you've got to give her some credit. She was fantastic, wasn't she?' Harry staggered back a few paces, his eyes showed disbelief.
'I thought what we had was real.' Harry finally spoke after a painful silence, still avoiding my gaze. 'The kiss we shared, I was a fool to think you'd meant it. Everything you said, they were empty words weren't they? I loved you...but I don't know what to think anymore. I thought I was the bad guy, I tried to set things right, but I was wrong. You were the trickster all along. I was just too blind to see it.' I stayed silent for fear of breaking down but I felt a warm tear rolling down my cheek. 'I guess I was the only who felt it was real.'
'But I-' I wanted to tell him the truth so badly but I caught Huttens' eye and he shot me a warning glance and I backed down. I felt like breaking down on the very spot. But I can't let myself look so vulnerable. 'Harry-'
Harry shook his curls and rubbed his face with his hands. 'So, are you satisfied yet Aze? Was this what you wanted? To toy with me? Get revenge? Have you gotten what you wanted?' His tone was soft but I could hear the anger in his voice. 'Or do you want more? I never thought for one moment that you would actually join the enemy.'
'Back then you were the enemy...' I pointed out but immediately regretted it. Harry's expression soften for a second but returned to hurt and anger. His stare made me feel so small.
'Have you got it?' Huttens inquired, his face held a threatening look. His hand was now fingering the blade of a sharp throwing knife.
Harry was looking at me with tensed curiosity. I looked at him apologizingly and reached into my pocket, fumbling nervously that the card kept slipping out of my fingers. 'Harry, I'm so sorry.' It was my turn to avoid his gaze. 'Please forgive me.' I slowly pulled out the key card and tried to keep it away from Harry's sight but the blue glow was unmistakeable in my palm.
'Is that-?' Harry's hands flew to his neck and removed the neckband which was without a key anymore.
'Well done!' Huttens clapped his beefy hands together, grinning menacingly. 'Azelynne my dear,' I shivered as his voice turned dangerously thin and cold. 'Give me the key.' He commanded, extending his hands.
I hesitated for a moment, taking a sideward glance at Harry whom was panic stricken. I tossed Huttens the card which he caught. 'No! My father!' Harry shouted, advancing forward towards his uncle with balled fists but I placed my hands on his chest and held him back. 'Back off!' He pushed harder and I found it difficult to hold him back, my feet slipping.
'Don't Harry.' I whispered. 'Don't do anything rash! Harry! Don't!' Harry ignored me and roughly knocked me aside. I stumbled backwards a few steps but I grabbed his wrist and pulled him away from Huttens. 'I don't want you to get hurt!'
His head whipped around, his green eyes were burning with anger. He just had that look, when he glares at you, it made you want to run away. 'I think you've succeeded in that already. You know something? I thought you were different from other girls, I guess I was wrong. Just-just get away from me!' He threw my hands away and walked out of the room, but not before giving me a hard bump on the shoulder, leaving me utterly speechless.
Huttens laughed and examined the card. 'Perfect. The last piece of the puzzle. My brother couldn't hide for long. This is the answer.' He held it up to eye-level and fingered it proudly before inserting it into a small slot at the side of his desk. A screen lit up on the surface of the table where a map revealed itself.
'Mr Huttens, I've done everything you asked.' My voice broke. 'Where's my sister? You promised me. You gave me your word.'
Huttens looked up from the screen and smiled slyly. I had an uneasy feeling, I didn't trust him. 'Sure. I always keep to my word.' He pressed a small button on the wall and the entrance to the room sealed shut. He clicked another button and another door appeared when the bookshelf slide aside. 'Follow me.'
I followed him, sweaty palmed, through what seemed like a narrow tunnel and appearing in another room, brightly lit and awfully white and empty. I let out a cry. Vendellynne was standing a few feet away from me, her face too had this gaunt look like other prisoners did. 'Ven!' I laughed and fell to my knees, my hands opened wide. I haven't seen her in months and I missed her so much. 'Vendellynne, it's me, Aze! Your sister! Remember me? Your horrible sister that treats you like crap!'
My two-year old sister shuffled quietly towards me, her blonde hair sweeping from side to side. She gave a little jerk and stopped in her tracks. She was crying.
'Ven.' I edged closer to her. A small drop of tear rolled down her cheek. Something was wrong. Her tear was bright red, the colour of blood. 'Vendellynne?' More blood streamed down her face from her eyes. Blood was also slowly leaking out from the sides of her mouth. 'Ven!' I shook her hard and her mouth parted as more blood gushed out. Her little pearly whites were stained with red. More blood and more blood, forcing their way out her nose and even her ears. Everything looked like something out of a horror movie. 'What did you do to her?!' I yelled over Huttens' maniacal laughters. I caught hold of Vendellynne before she fell and rocked her in my lap, trying to stop the bleeding but to no prevail. I was soon siting in a pool of red, my white attire was soaked with blood. 'Help...' I mumbled uselessly. 'Help...' It was getting hard for me to breathe as I choked on my tears.
What seemed like forever, Vendellynne became still. Her skin was deathly white and her flesh looked shrunken. Her lifeless blue eyes stared aimlessly, a coat of red filling up her eyes. I brought her towards me and gave her a tight squeeze, sobbing uncontrollably. I was really alone now. Something poked my arm and I felt around Ven's neck and pulled a small little dart with a tube connected to it. The little remains of a grey liquid swirled around the insides.
I crushed the tube in my palm and the broken glass cut through my hands but I didn't care. 'You promised!' I shouted, getting to my feet. 'You gave your word, Huttens!'
Huttens was caught off guard for a second and quickly pulled out a gun, aiming at my forehead. I stopped, but I was fuming. 'I kept my word.' He insisted. 'I gave her back to you. You just never told me specifically how you wanted her. What was I to do? I had no other options. She was an obstacle in my plan.' He said with fake sympathy.
'I should've known you had more dirty tricks up your sleeves!' I spat, picking Vendellynne in my arms. I started to make my way to the exit when a dozen of Seizers came marching in and surrounded me. 'Huttens! What are you doing? I've done all that you've asked. Release me!'
Huttens raised an eyebrow. 'I'm not done with you yet. We have unfinished business my dear.' A Seizer grabbed my hands but I managed to squirmed out of his grip and punched him in the face, or more like his helmet, which cracked slightly where else my knuckles were throbbing with pain and were bloodied. A couple more hands caught my hands and tied it firmly behind my back and pinning me onto the ground. I let out a high-pitched scream before a large armored fist came in contact with my face.
