Chapter 24

'Azelynne!' My mum screamed.

'Mum!' I tried to reach out to her but she fell dead on the floor. 'Mum!' I rushed to her side and lifted her head up. A loud piercing scream echoed endlessly through the desert. That was where I found myself at. With my dead mother, and her detached head. I dropped it in surprise and it rolled out of sight, covered by a layer of fine hot sand.

A cold small hand touched my shoulder and I gave a small jump of fright. Swiveling around, I cried with joy. 'Willy! There you are! I knew you wouldn't give up so easily!' My smile faded. Something was not right about him. His blue eyes showed signs of fear, he had cuts and bruises all over his small face. 'Willy?'

'They're coming! We need to get out of here. C'mon! Before its too late! He's gonna kill u-' Willy shouted abruptly and a long sword protruded out of his body. 'M-m-m-mum-m...' His legs gave way and I caught him before he hit the ground.

'Willy.' My voice broke as I slowly pulled out the sword. 'What's happening?' I muttered to myself.

'Save my daughter!' Another voice yelled and I swivelled around.

'Myrius! You're alive!' I cried and got to my feet. He was treading aimlessly in the sand.

'Azelynne!' A voice I only knew too well followed by another familiar one. 'You promised to get me safely back home! Let's go!'

'Nolene! Eleanor! Where are you?!' The wind was getting stronger and sand was flying everywhere. I could only make out two figures in the distant.

'Where's my daddy?' A little girl's voice echoed hauntingly. 'Have you seen my daddy? I want to go home!' She wailed and started crying.

I turned around in circles, voices kept ringing in my head. I couldn't see anyone else. Despair was cloaking my mind. I clamped my ears shut with my hands but the sounds only seemed to get louder and louder. 'Shut up, shut up, shut up! Stop it!' I tried to block out the noises with my own voice.

Then I heard it. The voice I dreaded to hear the most. 'Azy? Quick! It's so cold here, and they starved me. Where were you?' I knew Vendellynne couldn't manage a sentence without stuttering and pronouncing the words wrongly. But it was her voice.

'Leave me alone!' I shrieked, pressing my hands harder against my ears. 'You're not there...you're not there...you're not there...' I kept muttering the same words over and over again, but the harder I try to drown out their voices, the more they sounded agitated. All four voices were shouting and yelling at once.

"I want my daddy!"

"You said you'd save her! Liar!"

"You gave your word! No matter what it takes! Look at where I am!"

"You let me die! After all I did for you!"

"But I didn't want to die! I'm scared, Azy! Please save me!!!"

'Go away!!! Shut up!' I sank onto the hot desert floor and hug my knees, curling myself into a ball. 'Stop it! I tried to save you all! I tried, I tried! Aaaaarrrrggghhh!!!' I screamed, my voice straining to go higher and louder. 'You are not real! All of you! YOU'RE DEAD!!!' The last two words boomed and silence fell.

My eyes shot open. Slowly, they tried to come into focus as they adjusted to the sudden light. My face was dabbed with cold sweat and my breathing was very jerky. My cheeks were tear-stained and only then did I realise that I was crying. I screamed, and I didn't care, I think I have been holding back too long, I had to let all the pain out. Rolling to the edge of the bed, which was further than it seemed, I placed my feet on the cold floor.
