"Don't look for what you shouldn't, or else you'll find out what you don't want"
I take the first file from that enormous tower of documents. It has a label in the cover with a date from December the 2nd, 2012. When I open it, I start searching between lines the answers that trouble me so much.
I stop when I see in one of the paragraphs the name "Ethan Cooper". I pay attention and carefully read every word in the expressed sentence. Suddenly, a goosebump runs down all my body when my eyes see every letter that spell "GUILTY".
But guilty of what?
Next it can be seen the crime for which he was judged: "FIRST DEGREE MURDER"
I keep reading to see the details of the homicide and a cold drop of sweat runs down my forehead. I can't believe the man has just entered Mr. Evans' office is a murderer.
Perhaps that's why he has a dominant and hypnotizing vibe? Was that all the mystery hidden behind the fancy suit and charming look?
I have never been in front of a murderer to confirm it, except for the tragic night when my life was saved in exchange for the death of that guy. However, in criminal psychology classes they always talk about the disturbing and strong energy that comes from the murderers.
But what I'm totally certain about is that nuances don't exist in murders. Every life is valuable (no matter if that man wanted to take mine). No one has the right to steal away the dreams, laughs, tears, hope and the wish of living. No one has that right, no matter how absurd the intentions are. So, Ethan Cooper shouldn't have any right to defend himself in front of these facts.
I hear in the distance of my thoughts someone calling me. It's Aaron's voice, who makes me get inside reality once more.
—Kailey, do you feel okay? You're pale, as if you have just seen a ghost.
Of course I've just seen a ghost in my thoughts. It's that image of the man lying on the floor from the alley that never stopped haunting me. I can't stop thinking about the deaths that appear here, in this bunch of papers with the same intellectual actor.
—Hmmm, I'm fine Aaron -I draw a big smile, while I stroke my head for a bit- It's just that I'm kind of tired -I wink my eye at him, letting him know that "I feel wonderful".
—Are you sure? You should do what they tell you and take some days to rest. If you wish, I can help you finish all your assignments -his hand gets close to the file that I have in mine.
—No, wait!... -I hold the file with all my strength so he can't take it from me- I'm almost done, I'll take care of it.
—Kailey, you are acting in a strange way -he takes my body with his hands, laying his eyes on mine. His look shows concern and frustration, as his lips clumsily mumble in low voice- Wha...What happened to you last night, exactly? I heard Evans saying you were in a hospital. Did you suffer an accident? -he asks in an uneasy tone.
For some reason, I feel guilty for having my friend awake all night. We have a short time knowing each other, but today he has shown his efforts on feeling worried about me, or at least letting me know he's taking care of me. It's a nice gesture, very few friends are like this, but I have this fear of our friendship getting complicated at some point.
I take off his hands from my face, I release a strong sigh from my lips, while I bow my face before answering him.
—I came out very late last night. I waited 2 hours for a taxi out of the building, but in vain. So I decided to walk to the next street to see if I was luckier. -Upset, Aaron interrupts me.
