Jake’s POV

I look like an idiot. I’m sat inside this club waiting for everyone else to turn up. They say meet at 9pm, I’m here at 9 but they aren’t. Great.

To: Liam. What time you getting here? Look like a right div!!

I send as quickly as I can.

From: Liam. Not long, about 5 mins.

Thank God. I have to admit, I’ve had a few to drink already, to build up my confidence to tell everyone my news. I don’t want sympathy, I just want them to know. The stupidest thing is that I can’t get Ella out of my head… At all. Not since our little meeting. I fell for her all over again. I want to tell her that, just so she knows.

From: Liam. Where are you?

To: Liam. Table nearest the bar.

The nerves build up inside and I down my whisky double, sending a shiver down my spine as I swallow it. It’s heaving in here and so noisy, but right now I feel like I’m alone.

“Jake!” A familiar female voice shouts and I look up to be greeted by Ella, looking absolutely stunning. I try and compose myself and make sure I’m not sitting gawping at her.

“You alright, babe?” I stand up and hug her, before sitting down and shuffling along to fit everyone else in.

“Great spot you picked!” Niall shouted, leaning over the table to shout at me.

“Thanks, man! Just thought we’d need a lot of drink in to celebrate!” I could see everyone stare blankly at me. “Or not…”

“How did you find out?” Harry shouted over.

“Find out what? I’m celebrating for myself?!” I say, confused.

“Oh!” Harry says, looking strangely relieved. “Sorry, got a little confused!” He laughed.

“Shots all round?” I ask.

“Not for me!” Ella shakes her head, which is weird. I know she loved a drink or five to celebrate. “Feeling a little under the weather today.”

“You sure?” I ask as I stand up and begin to walk over to the bar. She nods back. “Err 10 shots please. A mix.” I shout to the barman over the music. I barely have time to blink before a tray of shots is in front of me and shoving the money at him, I walk back carefully. “Take one everyone!” I smile and the boys cheer as they grab a shot, but Ella doesn’t.

“So what are you celebrating?” Zayn asks.

“Yeah, what’s the round of shots for?” Louis adds.

“Well,” I take a huge sigh. “My wedding has been cancelled!” Everyone looks at me confused.

“Why the hell are you celebrating that?” Conor asked bluntly.

“Cos she was a bitch and I finally got the courage to leave her.” I smiled, but no-one else did. “And she cheated on me.”

“She was a bitch then!” Ella smiled. “We should celebrate!” Everyone, minus Ella, grabs their shot and downs it, some scrunching their faces up at the awful taste. After a few of these, I’ll get the confidence up to tell Ella I was stupid before…

“Well, I’ll get the next round in cos me and Ella have something to celebrate too!” Conor said and my stomach dropped. Something big was coming… And everyone knew apart from me. What could it be? They’re getting married? If they are… Well there’s no point in me saying anything. Conor comes back with a tray and we all take a shot, but he bought a lemonade for Ella.

“Ella, I think this is your time to shine!” Niall says, Conor agreeing.

“Jake.” Ella looked into my eyes, her eyes shining in the light and emphasised by her makeup looked so beautiful, I could get lost in them. She is so pretty. She deserves someone amazing. Not Conor, he’s caused her trouble. He made such a fool of her at the beginning… “Jake, I’m pregnant!” I barely listen as I continue with my inner monologue. She deserves me. I’d treat her like a princess, I’d- Wait what? She’s pregnant? I practically spit my drink all over the table.

“Oh.” I say, not knowing whether to pretend I’m overjoyed or not. I mean I’m happy for her, of course, but she’s mine! She’s been mine for years and years… And now Conor’s taking her away from me.

“Oh. Not happy then?” Conor asks me.

“It’s just a shock, that’s all!” I fake a grin. “Well congratulations guys!” I say, trying to hide that inside I’m dying. I can feel my heart being ripped apart, and it’s so painful. I feel dizzy and sick partly because of the news and partly because I was more drunk than ever before. Note to self, never ever predrink… I need to get some air. I’ve just broken up with my fiancée, our wedding in months and everyone is too happy because they’re expecting a baby?! “I need some air…” I manage to breathe out as I stumble past everyone and walk out. The freezing cold air hits me in the face, well slaps me, and I breathe it in and out, feeling its coolness moving into and out of my lungs.

“Jake?” I turn round to see Ella coming out behind me, but she’s not wearing the red leather jacket she walked in with.

“Ella! It’s freezing out here, go back inside!” I order, but she shakes her head.

“Are you alright? You ran outta there pretty quick!” She said in that concerned tone she always had, even when we were like 7.

“I’m fine. It’s just been a pretty weird day for me…” I say, looking down at the floor.

“I can imagine. So you and Penny, are you like over over?”

“Yeah. I slammed the door in her face!” I laughed a little as I remember back to only a few hours before when we argued like there was no tomorrow.

“I’m really sorry to hear that. And I’m sorry our news just happened to be on the same night!” She smiled sympathetically at me, but she stood there shivering. I take my jacket off and wrap it round her.

“Here you go. Be warm in your condition!” I smile.

“Sorry I couldn’t tell you before, I feel like I’ve not seen you in forever!” She said, looking to the floor.

“Don’t worry, hun, it’s not a big deal, you’re here now!” I smile at her, I can’t help but smile when I look at her. NO. I have to get this out of my head. She is JUST Ella. JUST my friend. She had to do the same with me when I started going out with Penny.

“Are you sure you’re ok?” She brings me back to the real world.

“Ella, I love you…” I sigh. She laughs.

“I love you too silly” She grins.

“No… Ella, I mean love. I love you!” She stands there, frozen to the spot. Shit! What did I just say? Fucking drink!

“Oh.” She says, practically mimicking me when I was at the table. “Well, I-” She was stunned, no words that she wanted to say were going to do anything but hurt me, and she didn’t want to do that.

“It’s alright, Ella. You’ve got Conor. I know. I just had to say it. I’m gonna go now… See you around.” I half smile.

“I guess so… When the feelings are subsided.” She says, seriously. The world went quiet. I could hear a pin drop… Oh wait, it was the slithers of my heart as it was torn to pieces again. She obviously found this really awkward.

“Ok…” I say, waving as I walked off. What a fucking idiot. It’s never going to be the same with her again. I blame drink, Penny, Conor, her… Me. I blame me.
