Jake’s POV
I finally receive the drinks I ordered about 20 minutes ago and rush back to the table, where Ella sits staring into oblivion.
“Sorry they took so long! Here you go, a tall skinny latte with chocolate sprinkled on it.” I handed to her with a smile. She gazed up at me with her big blue eyes, although you could see they were crying out to be saved.
“You always knew how to cheer me up! My favourite drink!” She grinned and took a sip, although her face creased as she realises it’s too hot. “Penny’s called you about three times already!” She said and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. I always had the motto of working through difficult times, but this was more like a war with myself and Penny. I grab my phone off the table and listen to my voicemail.
“Jake? Jake, where the hell are you? I had dinner in the oven for us and you text me saying you’re gonna be late? Is it that Ella again? For goodness sake! You’re marrying me, not her! You always drop everything for her, it’s ridiculous! I’ve been busy all day planning this wedding and you don’t even care! Sometimes I wonder what the point in all this is! Anyway, call me back. Bye.” I shake my head and hang up. This is ridiculous.
“Everything alright Jake?” Ella looked over to me, head rested in one hand as she stirred her drink. “You look really annoyed! Is it Penny? What did she say?” I look down at my phone and quickly text Penny.
To: Penny. If there’s no point in us, don’t bother. I have business to attend to. I’m with Ella and it’s better company than you’ve given in a long time. SEND.
“She’s just stressing me out at the moment.” I reply honestly. “She’s so bossy and controlling. I know it makes me sound like a pussy, but I don’t care when I say it to you. The wedding is all she cares about, but she’s wanting me to pay for most of it! When I said I couldn’t she flipped out! Now she keeps complaining that I’m talking to you too much and not working on the wedding plans!” I shook my head, but it felt like a weight off my shoulders to tell her. As I spoke, she looked at me, listening and clinging onto every word I said, acknowledging my feelings and sympathising with me.
“I think she needs a good talking to!” Ella exclaimed. “Sounds like she’s got too big for her boots and…” She paused and picked her phone out of her pocket.
“Hello?” She answered wearily. “Penny? How’d you get my number?” She asked, confused. She handed the phone over to me. “She wants to talk to you first.” I grab the phone, ready to shout.
“Jake, what the hell? What was with that text? Are you saying you don’t want us to be together anymore?” She spat down the phone.
“You said it.” I answer simply.
“I want you home now, forget about Ella for a second! We need to talk!” I rolled my eyes.
“No. I’ll see you when I get home.” I say and hang up the phone, handing it back to Ella. “If she calls you again, ignore it, she’s doing my head in.” I say, angrily and Ella simply nods. God why couldn’t I have found a girl like her? So pretty and down to earth! Every night I lay in bed and think of the day I told her I had a girlfriend and that we had to get any feelings for each other out… I regret saying that every single day. Now she’s happy with Conor and I’m stuck in a relationship I can barely even be bothered with! And I’m meant to be marrying her? Oh God, I’ve made a huge mistake!
“You hear about Liam and Louis?” She suddenly asks me, dragging me from my thoughts. Truth be told, I haven’t spoken to them since our last meet up!
“No, I haven’t! Is everything alright?” I ask, worried.
“Danielle and Eleanor have gone on a break with them!” She said, sadness in her eyes. “Liam hadn’t told Danielle they had extended the tour to a month and she shouted at him and they’ve not spoken since… But I think Eleanor was convinced by Danielle that it was bad they were not immediately told and Eleanor soon put a hold on her and Louis’ relationship too!” My face dropped. Here I was, meant to be a friend to them all and I didn’t even know news that was common knowledge to even the haters of One Direction, nor did I know anything that had happened with Ella! Penny is really trying to make everyone forget who I was, or vice versa.
“How are they taking it?” I question, no idea what to say to this news. Both of those relationships were as solid as I’d ever seen any relationship…
“I’ve only spoken to Liam once; he’s handling it worse than Louis. I just wanted to meet up with him and give him a hug, but I can’t!” Her face dropped.
“What? Why?” I ask, confused.
“Conor and Zayn had an argument, and Zayn said he didn’t need us. You know Zayn, speak before you think? Well now Conor has made me promise not to talk to them anymore.” She took a long sip of her drink. “I know there’s a reason, I can tell, but I’ve not found out why yet!”
“Ah, don’t worry, I’m sure Conor wouldn’t hate you for talking to them once or twice!” I smile.
“Well that’s the problem…” She sighed and took another sip of her drink. “I spoke to Liam and lied and said I was talking to you and Penny… At the time, I thought it was easier to lie… if he finds out I’ve spoken to them…” She shook her head. “He literally doesn’t want anything to do with them right now…”
“I thought you guys were gonna tour together or whatever?” I ask.
“Well, yeah. Conor’s put the talk on hold till we’ve had some time to ourselves, like probably tomorrow or the next day, but Zayn and him are gonna be a loggerheads and he’ll probably turn down the tour!” She looked distressed. “And if anyone mentions me speaking to Liam it’ll literally be the worst day ever for him!”
“Don’t worry about it, hun.” I take her hand that’s rested on the table and hold it gently. “He should understand! He’s wrong for making you stop talking to them!” I offered her a comforting smile and she squeezed my hand as to say thank you. “But if it all does go well tomorrow, let me know and we can all go out to that club again! Although this time, let’s not do a shots challenge and let’s not let Zayn knock wine all over a woman.” I laugh. That was such a fun day, nothing like what I have now…
“Yeah it’d be good to see you out and about with us!” She smiled. “I feel like I’ve not seen you properly in forever!” I knew we both knew I saw her the day she freaked out and went to her sister’s grave in the rain, but I certainly wasn’t going to bring that up and I don’t think she counts that as a ‘proper meet up’ anyway.
“Definitely! It’ll be good to get out of the house! Honestly, I don’t know if I can find any positives right now… She’s grinding me into the dirt! I need to escape!”
“I’d offer you a place at mine, but currently I’m stuck in that tour bus… If you called up the boys I’m sure they’d be happy to see you!” She said, looking down as the vibrations of my phone interrupt the conversation.
“I should be alright for one night! Just make sure Conor and Zayn get on tomorrow so we can go out!” I laugh. She laughs too. The bright white smile cheers me up, and it seems like she has cheered up too! If only I could spend more time with her, or someone who did make me feel happy. I’d assumed Penny would do that, but hey, look how that turned out. She suddenly checks her watch.
“Shit! I gotta go! I need to check the arena!” She jumped up and out of the chair and ran round to me, grabbing me and pulling me into a hug and kissing me on the cheek. “I’m so sorry! Hopefully I can see you tomorrow?”
“Don’t worry about it!” I grin widely. “I’m hoping I see you tomorrow!” I wink. She giggles and runs out of the shop. It didn’t even bother me about her swift exit, my heart was still pounding. Could it be possible? Could I still have feelings for Ella?
