I'm awoken by Mia crying and Jessica running into the room, yelling, "You gotta see this!" I lean up, rubbing my eyes, and grouchily snapping, "See what?"
Standing up, I walk over and pick up Mia. Jessica hurries out of the room and I follow quickly behind her because Jessica is usually a calm and collected girl. I find her in the living room and turning the TV volume up. I cover Mia's ears and watch the screen. There's a family coming from the river's water. The man of the group looks calm, the wife, that holds a little girl on her hip, looks nervous and the young boy beside her looks proud of himself. Runaways maybe? They're so pale though. The baby girl on the woman's hip, is grabbing at her mother's fire red hair.
They sit on the rocks and face the water. They look so calm when they see the water. An officer walks over to them and insists to take them to the station. When they struggle at him touch, the man attacks the officer, and holding him under the water until his body goes limp. Other officers run out and grab at the family. The mom puts the little girl down and says something to her before launching herself at the officers. There's screaming. I grab the remote from Jess and yell, "JESUS MAN. TURN IT DOWN", as I lower the volume. Mia is crying into my arm, I pull her to my chest and pet her hair as I continue watching. There's more men running out of the water and tackling the officers and civilions.
The little girl is gone and the rest of her family is fighting. The woman's firey hair out of it's once stable condition, now flying everywhere and messed up. The teenage boy is kicking at civilion's faces and bodies. There's so much blood so I look away from the television and close my eyes. After a while, I look back at the TV and there's blood everywhere. The LIVE sign in the corner of the screen blanks out for a moment and the camera is shaky but still focused on the scene. There's blood everywhere, bodies, and the sound of people's feet against the asphalt as they run. The men run up to the shore and there's loud screaming. The original family stands there. The husband pulls his wife and son into a group hug. They say something to each other and the husband and wife kiss for a long moment. The son continues to look at the ground then looks up, his dad pats his back and his mom takes him in a long hug, saying something to him before pulling him into another hug.
New officers, obviously from out of town, are running onto the beach and pull out their guns. The mom looks up at them panicked then screams go, causing the teenage boy is running down the beach extremely fast. The firey redhead and the man kiss one last time before launching themselves at the officers. The wife gets shot in the lower arm but still thrashes at the neck of the officer. There's blood and screaming all across the normally calm town. Then the loudest scream comes from the woman holding the camera. The camera falls and we can hear her thrashing and yelling, her blood going everywhere until her body falls limp on the ground and her green eyes are empty. Then the camera blacks out and goes back onto the news to see shocked and terrified faces. The woman notices that they're back on and screams, "CUT IT OFF" then the news goes off. A blue screen pops up with a black message, monotone saying that there are techincal difficulties.
Mia is no longer crying but she looks terrified. I turn to Jessica, noticing that she's staring out the window. I do the same and realize that the beach is only a few miles away from our apartment complex. She says, " We need to get out of here... now" I nod and grab a backpack, filling in with food, money, Mia's things, and other personal needs. Jessica grabs her money and random medications, if we'll need them or not, I'm not sure. When I'm done packing two small bags, I carry them out and to the car, where Jessica is waiting. She is obviously shaken by what's going on and I wonder if I look like that too. I throw the bags into the back and jump into the dark blue SUV and hop into the passenger seat, and slam the door behind me. She speeds out of the parking lot and we sit in complete silence for multiple miles.
Then I realize that Mia never lets a car ride be silent because she loves riding in cars. I also realize that I'm the worst parent ever.
