"mama! no! don't!" a young ten year old girl wailed, her small fingers tightly wrapping around the blanket her mother laid below, the pity sounds the nurse made disturbing her. "she's just asleep" the girl countlessly whispered to herself, trying to console herself and the tears which went down her eyes.
her father walked up to the young girl, she looked up at him. his face unrecognisable. his face was avoid of any emotions although the dark blue bags under his swollen red eyes spoke otherwise. "get up nova. she's gone". nova shook her head, not being able to believe the harshness in her father's voice. "mamá no se ha ido (mama is not gone)" nova yelled in her native language, yelling to let her be known. to tell everyone that her mother was still there with her. the ten year old girl needed her mother by her side.
nova's eyes sprang open, she gasped to inhale some air and sweat trickled down her forehead even though the room was chilly. she removed the blanket from her body, tapping her phone's screen to check the time.
4:49 am
she decided to get up and just meditate to calm down her racing heart.
the dream was almost regular, it came to haunt her at least once a month. the dream of her mother's death.
nova had always admired her mother for the woman she was. she had loved like no other but she could also feel hurt like no other. valentina had always loved nova for who she was, she cheered her on when nova took part in small theatre shows. she was always there for nova. she was nova's best friend.
her mother had been pregnant with nova's younger brother who nova had already loved since they found out about him. she had thought of a name too; nicolas. it was perfect and it started with the same initial as nova's. she used to have dreams; of her and a young boy laying in her lap as she fed him.
her younger brother. dead.
he didn't even get the chance to see life from outside the womb.
god inherited two angels at once and she despised god for that.
nova had heard her mother's screams as she had tried to push out the baby just at her seventh month of pregnancy. they had been in an accident. a drunk driver hit their car in the middle of the night and the doctors said this was the only option. her mother spent nine hours in labor and as morning came nova expected to wake up and see nicolas. but instead, she woke up to her father shaking her awake and telling her about how much her mother loved her.
that had confused nova, she had demanded to be brought to the hospital to see her mother herself. and she did, she saw her lifeless body laying on the hospital bed.
nova shook these thoughts from her head, she wanted to day to be joyful.
her phone tinged and she glanced at the new notification.
a smile formed on her lips when she read his name.
maybe it would be a good day.
