ALEJANDRO

What the hell was I doing making empty promises to her? I can't promise that she'll be safe, I can't even keep myself safe.

I slowly followed behind Layla in the lunch line, I tapped my foot impatiently, trying to decide whether to tap her shoulder or not. I haven't seen her since Saturday, I dropped her off at her house and we haven't spoken since.

"You've been following me all day." She muttered, reaching for an apple.

"I'm just watching over you."

She scoffed, "What are you my guardian angle now? I don't need your protection at school, nobody is going to be blazing their guns here."

"This is America, you'll be surprise of what could happen."

I reached for the last chocolate milk and she did as well, us both grabbing each others hands. We looked at each other and she quickly looked back down at her tray.

"Take it." She quickly picked up her tray and walked away from me. I was about to go follow her but I stopped in my tracks once I saw her friends gathering around her.

"Alejandro!"

I turned my head to see Darrien, giving me a frown. One would think he was about to beat me up but that's just his face. I walked over to my normal table. "Why the hell aren't you answering my calls?" He questioned, sounding like a nagging girlfriend.

I rolled my eyes and sat down. Can't a man just eat their fake square cheese pizza in peace?

"I'm sorry hunny, I was too busy getting stabbed."

"So that wasn't a lie, when Rico told me that shit. I thought he was fucking joking." Roxy said almost choking on her food, she stood up from her seat, "Move." She demanded Darrien. He sucked his teeth and stood up.

She sat down, reaching for the hems of my shirt, slightly lifting it up she let out a gasp and then started to dart her eyes around the cafeteria her eyes stopped and glared, I looked over to who she was staring at it was, Layla.

She stood up and I quickly grabbed her hand, "No."

"That bitch did this to you. It her fault she has to pay."

"Sit down." I ordered.

"But she got you in this situation," she said through gritted teeth, trying to get out of my grasp.

"I'm not going to ask you again."

She let out a huff and sat down, crossing her arms, pissed.

"Do you care about her or something?" She said bitterly.

I grabbed a hold of her chin, "You know I only care about you." I caressed her cheek. I placed my elbow on the table and rested my cheek on my knuckles and smirked at her. "You jealous."

"Jealous of black barbie over there? No, never." She scoffed.

LAYLA

"Layla? Did you hear me?"

The sound of Jasmine's voice was starting to get on my nerves. I don't know if its because I have a stupid test next block or because I was still agitated about what happened with Alejandro.
